"We had very balanced scoring and I was very pleased," Grizz head coach Steve Humann said. "We ran good bench contributions from Whitney Chase and Bailey Hasty. They helped us quite a bit, so I was very happy with our bench." Ashland had four players post double-figures in the 64-54 dousing of the Bulldogs in the first round of the three-day tournament. Spurts of defensive prowess helped Ashland hold off Hermiston. "At the beginning of the game and during the third quarter we came up very well defensively," Humann said. "It's kind of been our experience to have a second period lull defensively. We're going to work on that." The Grizz led by six going into halftime, 27-21, then out-scored the Bulldogs 19-11 in the third quarter to give Ashland a comfortable 14-point cushion. However, in the closing eight minutes of play, Hermiston made a final push to regain the lead. The Bulldogs gave Ashland a scare, as junior Grizz post Abeni Hill fouled out, but Ashland held off Hermiston and cruised to a 64-54 win. "We need to stay out of foul trouble," Humann said. "We need to have our starters on the floor longer. Jamie and Abeni have to stay on the floor." Even with the win, the Grizzlies left room for improvement. "We have to increase our intensity throughout the game," Humann explained. "If we keep our intensity through most of the game, I feel we can do very well in this tournament, but the opening of our season is this Friday against Eagle Point and that is most impor- tant." Junior Grizz guard Hilary Huyett scored a game-high 17 points, including three three-pointers, while junior point guard Alysse Carlson contributed 12. The Grizzlies will face Marshfield Tuesday night in the semifinals. Ashland boys At Coos Bay, Midwestern League powerhouse Churchill High destroyed Ashland in the first round of the Les Schwab South Coast Holiday Tournament. The Lancers led 42-22 at the half, then went on a 25-8 scoring run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach for the Grizzlies. Junior Grizz forward Corey Costantino led Ashland with nine points. Ashland plays in the consolation bracket Tuesday.
