After months of seething controversy involving strongly held opinions by vocal opponents, the City Council voted Tuesday night to award the contract for a modern work of art at the south entrance to downtown Ashland. The winning proposal, which is actually a substitute for the city's first choice, is appropriately titled "Threshold." It will be erected at the intersection of Siskiyou Boulevard, North Main Street and Lithia Way, between the Ashland library and the fire station. We've said before that no work of public art will ever please everyone, because art appreciation is inherently subjective. We weren't particularly enamored of either proposal from Seattle artist Susan Zoccola, but of the two choices at the end of the process, we preferred the originally chosen concept, titled "Gather." Still, we're prepared to move on, and those who opposed the selected work, criticized the Public Arts Commission and the council and denounced everything else about this project should be, too. They also should take some satisfaction from having successfully pressured the council to ask the artist for an alternative proposal. The council was under no obligation to do that, and it's more likely councilors were responding to a relatively small group of committed opponents amplified by social media than to a broad groundswell of majority opinion. In any case, the City Council heard and responded to public concerns, though not to the extent opponents might have wished. It's time to move on.
