Suspect claimed he saw an intruder BY AMBER FOSSEN Ashland Daily Tidings A man who fired six to eight shots from a 7mm deer rifle inside an Ashland apartment complex was allegedly under the influence of a controlled substance. Ashland Police responded to the Hillside Inn apartments at 8:35 a.m. Thursday morning after receiving reports of shots fired. Residents at the Inn, located in the 1500 block of Siskiyou Boulevard, were unharmed by the early morning incident. Police arrested and lodged Ataji "Anthony" Dominguez, 30, in the Jackson County Jail after he was taken to the hospital for medical clearance. He was lodged on charges of six counts of unlawful use of a weapon, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and resisting arrest. His bail was set at $46,000 but later reduced to $25,000 at his arraignment Friday afternoon. A preliminary hearing has been set for 4 p.m., Friday, July 25. A 7mm deer rifle is generally used for big game hunting. "(A shot fired) in an apartment?" said Chris Goldschmidt, an employee at Blackbird Shopping Center, "You would be deaf, I'll tell you that. Does, he still have windows in his house? I can't imagine." According to APD Sgt. Teresa Selby, the suspect claimed to be shooting at an intruder, even after a search of the apartment concluded Dominguez was alone. "He was under the influence of a controlled substance," she said. "He thought he was seeing people and was shooting at them." Witnesss reported seeing Dominguez sweating and shaking when the police arrived. At least four bullets entered the downstairs apartment and another was located in resident Richard Sisk's apartment. Other shots were located within the suspect's apartment. "I came home and I saw plaster and white footprints all over the place," Sisk said, noting he was not home at the time of the shooting. The bullet lodged in Sisk's kitchen wall. "In order for him to get that bullet where he got it, he would had to have been by his bed shooting at the wall level. It wasn't angled up or down it was a straight shot. There's no other way for him to have fired that shot," Sisk said. Sisk said he's grateful that nobody was injured. However, he does intend to move. "I didn't give notice, but I told him (the manager) I'm looking," he said.
