Not a bad week for Jamie Roupp. ROUPP The Ashland High guard who led the Grizzlies’ girls basketball team to its best season ever — fifth place — as a senior accepted an athletic scholarship Wednesday to play for Washington State University. The surprise phone call from WSU head coach Sherri Murrell came after another player backed out of a scholarship, opening up a spot for Roupp. Ashland’s 5-foot-9 floor leader, who graduated from AHS Friday, was more than happy to abandon her plan to make the team as a walk-on. “I couldn’t believe it,” Roupp said Friday in a phone interview during the graduation rehearsal. “We were at Giseppi’s eating lunch and I was like, ‘Are you kidding me.’ I couldn’t stop smilling.” Roupp won’t have much time to celebrate. She leaves next Saturday for Washington State’s summer school program, which begins June 19. Though not mandatory, most of Roupp’s new teammates will be there, both to get a leg up on school work and to prepare for the 2006-07 season by working out together. Roupp is planning to major in Psychology and/or Education. “I want to be a coach, so whatever gets me there,” she said. Roupp had originally considered attending a lower level program such as Willamette or Pacific Lutheran, but fell in love with WSU after visiting the NCAA Division I school. “I decided immediately that this is where I wanted to go,” she said. Roupp did it all for the Grizzlies her senior season, finishing among the Southern Oregon Conference’s leaders in points, assists and rebounds while helping Ashland advance to the Class 4A semifinals. She was rewarded for her all-around game by being voted the SOC player of the year. Roupp also lettered in both soccer and track and field. Soccer was her primary sport until her junior year, when Roupp began focusing on basketball.
