Submitted photos Rogue Valley residents are invited to celebrate Earth Day at North Mountain Park in Ashland, and discover how individuals, organizations and businesses can join “Together for Tomorrow.” Admission is free. More than 40 exhibits from local non-profit organizations, businesses and government groups will demonstrate how southern Oregonians can become better environmental stewards. Cleaner modes of transportation, including fuel efficient hybrid vehicles will be on display, and a homemade bio-diesel processor will show how to make clean burning, renewable fuel from used vegetable oil. A local natural building group, House Alive, will teach how cob and strawbale is used to build homes. At the Electron Connection display, visitors can be “clouds” and see how solar energy is used to generate electric power. Interactive displays about organic agriculture, seafood choices for healthy oceans, native plants gardening, earth-friendly cleaning products, and water and energy conservation will encourage all ages to create a sustainable lifestyle. Several non-profit groups, including Southern Oregon Land Conservancy, Headwaters, Klamath-Siskiyou Wildlands Center, Siskiyou Project, Soda Mountain Wilderness Council and The Nature Conservancy will raise awareness about local ecological issues and opportunities for citizens to take action. Members of the Ashland Tree Commission will offer mini-workshops on proper tree pruning and care. To raise funds for a new solar installation at North Mountain Park, all visitors may participate in a raffle and silent auction. An exhibit about the history of Earth Day and environmental laws will remind visitors about the importance and impact of this annual, international celebration. Artwork by students from Rogue Valley schools will also be on display. New this year is an All Species Parade, a procession of art and music to celebrate wildlife. Led by the sounds of Samba Like it Hot, children and adults dressed as plants and animals will convene on the ball field at 1:30 p.m., circle through the park and culminate in a community circle of dance in honor of life on Earth. This parade is unique with a few guidelines: no written words, no motorized vehicles, and no live animals. Masks and costumes are encouraged but not required; mask-making crafts and face-painting will be available at the event for all to join the parade. Children will enjoy hours of fun and educational activities. The “GeoJourney” tour of exhibits will offer prizes for visiting displays and completing hands-on activities. A 15-foot Earth Ball will be kept afloat on the ball field through cooperative games. At the Bicycle Rodeo, kids may ride through an obstacle course and learn about hand signals and bike safety. At the ScienceWorks bicycle energy exhibit, children will learn how pedal power can be used to run a fan, light and radio. Enjoy live entertainment throughout the day. Dancing Spirit Drum kicks-off the celebration with traditional tribal drum songs. The Rogue Valley Peace Choir will share their love of singing and desire to make the world a better place through songs advocating for freedom, respect for the environment and community well-being. Talented young performers from Ashland Middle School’s Mukombe Marimba Club will perform joyful rhythms and melodies inspired in Zimbabwe. Hip-hop band the Beat Greens will give the crowd cognizant funky grooves. Visitors can also see theatrical acts. Elib Christ-Dwyer of ScienceWorks will perform H2wOah!, a ScienceWorks show about the water cycle. Wendy Weasel and Bucky Beaver of North Mountain Park Puppet Theater will help kids understand how they can make sure that local wildlife has a clean and safe place to live. Planet-friendly food and beverages will be for sale, including Pangea wraps, 4 & 20 Blackbirds cookies, Kettle chips, Pyramid juice, Heartsong chai and natural sodas. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches will be available for children ages 12 and under. In the spirit of Earth Day and due to limited parking, visitors are encouraged to walk, bike or ride the free RVTD shuttle from park-and-ride locations in Medford, Talent and Ashland. Bikes provided, or use your own. Noon –12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.–3 p.m.: Tree Pruning Demonstrations At the barn, members of the Ashland Tree Commission will teach tree pruning techniques. All Day Earth Friendly Edibles Purchase a delicious, planet-conscious treat at the concession building. All Day Natural Building Demonstrations Near the batting cage, local natural building professionals from House Alive will teach how cob and strawbale may be used as building materials. All Day Solar Raffle and Silent Auction Help raise money for a new solar system here at North Mountain Park, and take home cool prizes. Visit the exhibit near the Nature Center.
