The event, scheduled for Feb. 12, is the club's main fundraiser for the year, said Graham Lewis, a Rotary club member and one of the event organizers. Lewis hopes this year's event will raise about $25,000, which will go to help at-risk youth, scholarships for Ashland High and Ashland Middle School students, and community programs. Giving to the youth of the community is a priority for the club, Lewis said. "With all the cuts being done in school funding, schools rely on the local community to help pick up the slack," he said. "The community needs to help tighten up the safety net when the government is not able to." Past donations have included the local skate board park, Community Works, Hope Equestrian Center and the Darex Family Ice Rink. To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Rotary, the Ashland-Lithia Springs club is participating with other Rotary clubs to complete the Bear Creek Greenway. The crab fest will also feature a silent auction, with items from local artists, merchants and lodges. Lewis said participants enjoy socializing with fellow community members, bidding on items and, of course, eating crab. "It's just a lot of fun," he said. "It's the one time of the year where you can eat with your fingers and dribble butter down your chin for a good cause." The crab fest is Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Windmill Inn of Ashland, 2525 Ashland St. Tickets to the event are $45. To reserve tickets or donate to the auction, call 292-0776.
