Ashland police had issued a press release Thursday night seeking the public's help in finding him. "Michael's back," Karen Darling, an Ashland resident who has known Dawkins for nearly 20 years, told the Daily Tidings just before 11 a.m. today. A friend e-mailed Darling this morning to let her know Dawkins was home. She did not know if Dawkins had returned on his own accord or been found by authorities. Dawkins has suffered from bipolar disease "for many years," according to Darling. She said this is not the first time she has received a suicide message from him. "A lot of times, I end up hearing from him after he's been found," Darling said. Several friends of Dawkins contacted the Ashland Police Department beginning around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, about two hours after Dawkins sent the message. "He sent me basically a suicide e-mail and CC-ed it to several other people," Darling said. The e-mail stated Dawkins, who lives alone, would not be at home, but indicated where the spare house key was hidden so friends or police wouldn't damage the door. He did not take his laptop and cellular phone with him. It's unclear whether Dawkins took his medication for bipolar disease with him. "He's a very nice man and he's been doing so well this year," Darling said. Dawkins had been more vocal in the community about his personal struggle with bipolar disease following the January suicide of Joanie McGowan, whom Dawkins had known for years. He wanted to work on educating the public about mental illness. "When Joanie passed away, it was devastating for him," Darling said. "It was a very empowering time for him as well, so I was so surprised that this happened again."
