On May 29, runners will gather at the mouth of the Klamath River, where it meets the Pacific Ocean, and embark on a four-day run that ends June 1 at the Old Sprague River Dam site in Chiloquin. The entire run distance could be about 260 miles. The Annual Salmon Run, which follows the salmon spawning path up the Klamath River, has been organized by the Karuk, Yurok and Hoopa tribes in the past. According to Klamath Tribes spokeswoman Taylor David, 2015 is the first year the Klamath Tribes are participating in the event. She said previous salmon marathons ended at Iron Gate Dam. This year, to symbolize the fish completing their journey into the Basin’s upper reaches, runners will trek all the way to Chiloquin. “This is going to be something we hope the community will embrace,” David said. “I think we will try to do this annually.” A salmon bake and feed at the Chiloquin Community Center will follow the run. Organizers expect at least 30 runners to participate. According to Craig Tucker, the Karuk Tribe Klamath coordinator, that number can swell to 100 or more when runners pass through cities and towns along the route. He said in Orleans, Calif., dozens of children greet the runners and jog with them. “It’s like a parade,” he said. David said the Klamath Tribes will provide pilot cars and assist runners from Topsy Reservoir to Chiloquin. Tribal members and the public are invited to run in the event or to help organize, she added. Organizers are asking for help with food and hospitality for guests. The next planning meeting is Tuesday, April 14, in the Flint Place Conference Room at the Klamath Tribes Tribal Administration building in Chiloquin.
