He is under the false impression that "she favors policies that would lead to more ... partitioning ... and interference with the maintenance of productive farmland." I was astonished that Brent, whose ideas have had my diverse support in years past, had arrived at such an inaccurate assessment. (He hasn't returned my phone call asking what basis he has for his opinion.) The truth is that Elizabeth Fujas has an open track-record and an unique viewpoint as both a successful hands-on farmer and fancy food producer, (Rising Sun Farms). She knows through her intelligent research and own sweat labor what needs to be done to save agricultural lands for food production as well as provide opportunities for small business people to thrive therein. Elizabeth is quite open to fielding questions from citizens. Marilyn Briggs Ashland Iraq war is still all about greed The perseverance of our next president (Bush or Kerry) will eventually bring "freedom and democracy" to the Iraqi people. Hundreds of military personnel and a countless number of civilians will continue to die each year in this "war on terror," but the end will justify the means. So let's try to visualize what Iraq will look like 10 years from now. Many Shiites and Sunnis convert to Christianity. Ornate churches spring up in prominent places. Mosques become pass. Baghdad has Wal-Marts, McDonalds and Starbucks. Contented, obese Iraqis carry cell phones and wear Nikes. The women are free to wear make-up and flaunt various parts of their bodies. Iraqi oil flows into "Condoleezza" tankers that land peacefully upon our shores. All is well in America. There are massive traffic jams, rampant road rage, puke-colored air, and an epidemic of breathing problems, but they are all small prices to pay for our freedom to make car payments. And for the tens of thousands whose lives were sacrificed on the altar of greed, we honor them with anniversaries. Robert Simms Ashland Thompson was totally off base I am thoroughly outraged by the blasphemous remarks made against my dearest mother for no reason what so ever. Whomever Mr. Brent Thompson is and felt compelled to write such absurdities obviously doesn't know up from down and has outside influences that don't have their facts straight. As Elizabeth's son, I know her very, very, very well you might say and to say she doesn't want to protect farmland is un-fathomable to me. First of all, she is a farmer and has been for the past 22 years and has been trying to preserve the land for about the same amount of time. Sub-divisions and creating an urban sprawl is the last thing on earth this kindred spirit would ever try to develop. And second of all, it's unfortunate that in the letters to the editors, facts do not have to be authenticated before publishing. I hope that not everyone believes everything they read ... especially this slanderous non-sense. Furthermore, an apology from Mr. Brent Thompson and retraction of his statements would show that he is a gentleman after all. Brent, if your reading this, please do you're homework next time. Pep Fujas Colestine Valley Vote for Buckley Peter Buckley has a strong desire to serve the voters of southern Oregon. He has new perspectives on the problems that have faced Oregonians for the past decade. His strong support for public education, the environment and molding a new consensus for community based change convinces us that he deserves support in the next election.
