Jefferson Public Radio has generously agreed to allow us to print installments of the popular “As It Was: Tales from the State of Jefferson” co-produced by JPR and the Southern Oregon Historical Society. Segments are broadcast regularly on the JPR network and a book compiling a number of installments is available. We look forward to offering history enthusiasts — and we know there are many here — the chance to see them in the newspaper as well, usually accompanied by a photograph from the archives. While we’ll focus on Ashland, we’ll also choose historical vignettes from throughout Southern Oregon and Northern California, as the wide and deep history of the area is intertwined. ∙ ∙ ∙ We really did get A Taste of Ashland during that event April 25-26, acquiring the flavor of local art, food and wine while traipsing about downtown. The pairings (or should that be treyings?) at each of the 17 stops were delectable. Of course, as one acquaintance we bumped into along the way put it, “you know you’ve had enough wine when all the art looks good.” The weather was better the second day, but everyone we saw both days seemed to be having a good time — but then, maybe they were just seeing the world through rosé-colored glasses …. ∙ ∙ ∙ OK, things I’m still getting used to: This is my first spring living in Southern Oregon. Highs in the 80s last week, now there’s a frost warning for this morning? Well, that would explain why somehow I’ve ended up with both flannel and short-sleeve shirts in my closet (usually one or the other is rotated out to the guest closet). … Saying “growers market” instead of “farmers market”: I am, or was, used to calling it the farmers market. Here, the tendency is growers market — which I’ve come to like, as it’s really a more inclusive word that better describes the market vendors. “Farmers” tends to evoke row crops, not orchards and certainly not grazing (those would be ranchers, not farmers, I’d say). So I’m good with growers market — but, for heaven’s sakes, I still won’t put an apostrophe on it, as it’s used in a descriptive, not possessive sense. … Using “cougar” instead of “mountain lion”: OK, if Oregon Fish and Game — er, Wildlife — prefers cougar to mountain lion, I’m fine with that. It’s shorter. Editors like shorter. California DFW prefers mountain lion. Headline writers prefer puma. Reporters struggling to not keep using the same word over and over will throw in catamount. … Over it, after 10 months living here: Sitting in the car while someone else pumps the gas. Now I’ll have to reacclimate to getting out of the car when I again venture out of state. ∙ ∙ ∙ Wanted: List ideas — Another item we’ll soon be launching is an ongoing series of lists, everything from places to take your dog for a walk or to run around to growers market vendors you should try to great places to take your mother for Mother’s Day to great places to propose.
