--> --> FOTAS prefers not to euthanize pets Since last summer I've spent many hours volunteering at the Jackson County Animal Shelter. During this time I have encountered much confusion regarding the Friends of the Animal Shelter non-profit organization and their interaction with the county animal shelter. I have also encountered disdain for the fact that our county shelter does euthanize unwanted pets. With the exception of one paid coordinator, FOTAS is an all-volunteer organization that works to ensure the socializing, sterilization, and adoption of shelter animals. These volunteers spend many hours nurturing and interacting with cats and dogs to improve their chances of finding a good home, and they bring a strong element of animal welfare philosophy into a county-run facility. Money donated to FOTAS is used only to enhance the well-being and adoptability of unwanted animals, not to support euthanasia. However, an unfortunate reality of this world we live in is there are more animals than homes, and some are simply not adoptable. Many of these animals are humanely killed because there is simply no other solution. One non-lethal solution would be to require by law that all cats and dogs in Jackson County be sterilized, or else their owners be heavily fined. How many here are ready to support such a law? Until this becomes a reality, please support FOTAS and other groups who are working to reduce the number of unwanted pets to zero, and put an end to the need for euthanasia.
