May 1 , 2006 The Homeless Experience Student project captures essence of one life The bottom of a stairwell in Southern Oregon University’s Marion Ady building is littered with rubble and garbage. There are signs of obsessive compulsive behavior. The sounds of passing cars and an occasional cough loom in the air. In fact, the entire bottom layer of the stairwell looks like it has been turned into a homeless camp. We read their expert opinions in the newspapers. And we nod our heads in agreement. They are our nation’s voices. These men and women have names with which we are all familiar, and they exist on both the left and the right. In politics, media and religion. Unfortunately, the enemies of these leaders are doomed. They cannot speak because they are not believed. They cannot stand and fight because they will be annihilated. They employ tactics of urban guerilla warfare and are condemned for the innocent casualties of such war strategy. They cannot penetrate our media to articulate their message unfiltered. Their problem is one with which many of us can identify. ... Because Hollywood carries so much baggage, it was understandable that some might assume the film would exploit a day that has taken on a dark and profound solemnity, a day of such unyielding pain and loss that there would simply be no way that filmmakers could capture, with respect and grace, its wrenching impact. In its 17th year, this event is rapidly becoming one of Ashland’s signature happenings. In 2006, it brings together 50 restaurants, wineries and breweries from the region — the most ever — and pairs them with 20 galleries in a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.
