--> --> Texas cowboy rodeo's all-time money leader LAS VEGAS (AP) - Joe Beaver became rodeo's career money leader Thursday night with a third-place finish in calf roping in the seventh round of the National Finals Rodeo. The 36-year-old cowboy from Huntsville, Texas, earned $8,069 to raise his career total $2,058,952, breaking the record of $2,053,259 set by roper Roy Cooper. "It's especially satisfying because I started out with Roy," said Beaver, a three-time all-around champion. "This record will last a little while, and then someone will come around and break it. And that's good because that means rodeo is progressing." Beaver finished third with a run of 8.5 seconds. Stran Smith of Tell, Texas, won the round at 7.5 seconds and Brent Lewis of Eloy, Ariz., was second in 8.2 seconds. Beaver has won the calf roping title five times in his 16-year career. He entered the NFR in 11th place, but has jumped to seventh with $34,132 through seven rounds of the 10-round rodeo. World leader Cody Ohl has earned $222,026, more than double Beaver's total of $98,694. "There are times when I hate rodeo," said Beaver, who has placed in each of the last four rounds. "I hate the travel. But it's the sport I chose to play so I've got to play it good." In bull riding, Cody Hancock of Taylor, Ariz., won the round with an 85 to move from fourth to first in the world standings with $120,190. Jesse Bail of Camp Crook, S.D., was second with an 82 and Blue Stone of Ogden, Utah, was third with an 82. Bail is second in the world standings and Stone is third.
