In less than a month, the all-new CR-V has earned a number of awards, including Motor Trend Magazine’s 2015 Sport Utility of the Year. The five-passenger, mid-size utility receives a number of enhancements and new features for 2015, including a new engine and transmission that improves performance while increases fuel economy. Still available in front- or all-wheel drive configurations, the CR-V, with a base price starting at $23,320, is available in four trim levels — LX, EX, EX-L and the top-of-the-line touring model. The big story under the hood is Honda’s new direct-injected Earth Dreams Technology inline-4 engine and continuously variable transmission, delivering more torque and responsiveness over last year’s powertrain. It also delivers impressive fuel economy numbers. Front-wheel drive CR-V models have an EPA fuel economy rating of 27 mpg city, 34 mpg highway (26 mpg, 33 mpg respectively for all-wheel drive models). That’s a 4 mpg city, 3 mpg highway improvement over the 2014 model. And the performance is extremely impressive. The 2.4-liter I-4 delivers ample low-end torque for quick acceleration to merge onto a busy freeway, and I truly love the changes Honda made to the suspension system. The new CR-V delivers an incredibly smooth ride on the highway. Additionally, improvements made to reduce noise, vibration and harness produced an ultra quiet cabin, making for a pleasant ride on just about any driving surface. And that’s just for starters. Honda included new interior and exterior design elements and several convenience features, that while individually small, make a big difference when driving down the road. Two examples are the redesigned center console armrest and the sliding sunvisors. There’s also a number of big enhancements, such a power liftgate feature, a new 10-way power heated driver’s seat with memory, and a new 7-inch touchscreen display. Standard on all EX and above trim levels, the system allows the user to tap, pinch and swipe to control audio and other telematics features, including the new navigation system. Now let’s talk safety: The 2015 CR-V is targeted to achieve top safety ratings, including a Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall vehicle score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Standard safety equipment on all models include vehicle stability assist electronic stability control system, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, six airbags and a front seat design that can help reduce the severity of neck injury in the event of a rear collision. Available safety features include the Honda Sensing suite of safety and drive assistive features, such as LaneWatch, forward collision warning, collision mitigation braking system, lane keeping assist system and lane departure warning. The new CR-V is a must for the test drive list. Neal White has been covering the automotive industry for more than 20 years and is affiliated with the Texas Auto Writers Association.
