They arrived with four sons and soon had two more. With six sons, there would be just enough hands for the family’s work of farming and mining. The sons (Cal, Joe, Sam, Smith, Robert and Ralph) all contributed as they grew up. One historical glass picture from 1904 shows the father and five of his sons posing in front of their large, hydraulic mining operation at the mouth of Sardine Creek near Gold Hill. Streams of water from the high-powered nozzles are washing onto the bedrock and fill, as the sons pose with a raised sledgehammer, panning for gold, or aiming one of the hoses. As the gold played out over time, the sons became dairy farmers, saw-mill operators, loggers and even ran the first jitney-taxi from Gold Hill to Medford. Today, thick brush, shrubbery and trees have reclaimed the Dusenberry family’s land.
