LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Oct. 3 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Oct. 3, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 3, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News End pesticide use Advocates for Healthy Landscapes is inviting all Ashlanders to be present at the City Council study session at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5 in the Community Development Building at 51 Winburn Way. Advocates for Healthy Landscapes (AHL) is a group of concerned citizens working to educate the public to end the use of certain toxic herbicides in Ashland and increase the use of safe solutions for weed control. At this time, we are focusing on the chemicals glyphosate (found in Roundup and other products) and 2,4-D (Crossbow and others). These chemicals have been shown in numerous scientific studies to cause great harm to human health and the environment. Many countries, and cities and towns in the U.S., have begun taking charge of their community's health by ending and/or labeling the use of glyphosate and other known pesticides. Because the State of Oregon disallows towns and counties from legally banning pesticides, AHL is asking the city to pass a resolution encouraging everyone — citizens and businesses — to discontinue their use of these products and promote safe solutions. Education of consumers, retailers, landscapers, homeowners associations and landowners is key, and the city can help us open the door. Yes, people can read the news (or not) about the dangers of these products, but that is not enough. We believe a city has a role to play in this discussion, because what one person sprays affects all of us — children, pollinators, earthworms, you and me — through the air we breathe, the soil and grass we walk on and the water we drink. There are safe solutions to managing "weeds," and we think support from the city to educate the community about this issue is crucial. AHL volunteers are currently collecting signatures from Ashland residents to support our request to have the city involved in this critical issue. If you don't see a volunteer with a clipboard, please visit NW Raw at 370 E. Main St. (next to Village Baker) to sign the petition. You don't need to be a registered voter — just a resident of Ashland or an owner of an Ashland-based business. We invite everyone to visit our Facebook page — Advocates for Healthy Landscapes — to learn more about this issue. We hope to see many Ashlanders at the City Council study session. Please come to show your support for this request to the city. Kristina Lefever Ashland Bears and garbage Several years ago, when raccoons kept breaking into our garbage and overturning the cans, I began to spray the garbage with some window cleaner, especially if there was something in there the raccoons really liked, like chicken bones. The strong smell of ammonia appeared to throw them off the scent, and we never had a problem again. Perhaps the same thing would work for bears? Tina Devon Gallier Ashland Add a painted arrow Have you ever noticed, as you drive into the Plaza area from the park, that there’s nothing to indicate that it’s a one-way street? We all know it is because we live here and all the cars are parked diagonally and who would think of trying to go the wrong way? The answer is, more people than you would think. I volunteer in the Chamber of Commerce booth on the Plaza, and it’s a rare Saturday afternoon that we don’t have to frantically rush out and wave our arms to stop a car going the wrong way. One time there were no less than three cars, following each other, all tourists of course, completely unaware, because there are no signs as you drive out of the park indicating that it’s a one-way street. I pointed this out to one of the police officers patrolling the downtown area and he said he’d notify the Street Department to paint an arrow on the street showing it was “one-way”. That was weeks ago and so far, nothing. Other than yet another wrong-way driver last Saturday. I mention Saturday because that’s when I’m there, but I’m sure it happens other days, too. Fortunately everyone is driving slowly so no accidents so far, but it’s only a matter of time. Just a painted arrow would solve the problem.
