Packwood to retire, return to Oregon The Associated Press PORTLAND - Former U.S. Sen. Bob Packwood said he plans to quit his Washington, D.C., lobbying business at the end of the current congressional session and return to Oregon to retire. "This is where my heart is, my home is; and it's where my life is," Packwood said in an interview aired Friday with Portland radio station KPAM. Packwood resigned from the U.S. Senate in 1995 after serving for 26 years. His reputation as a Republican champion of abortion and women's rights was spoiled by allegations that he made unwanted sexual advances to 17 female employees and colleagues. He launched his lobbying business, Sunrise Research Corp., in 1997. Packwood, 68, said he'd like to write his memoirs from a daily diary he kept during his political career. He told KPAM he's also interested in working on a civic project that could give Portland the finest parks system in the United States. On Feb. 15, Packwood will be required to disclose through his annual lobbying report how much he made in the calendar year 2000. He said the figure will be $1.5 million from nine clients, including Northwest Airlines, United Airlines and the North American Coal Co. Packwood's wife is Elaine Franklin, his former chief of staff who is now a political consultant. They have homes in the Portland area and Washington, D.C. Visit our back issue library Email your...
