GRIZZ ROUNDUP Marist fends off Grizz upset bid Spartans ride early-goal momentum to MWL win By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 16, 2015 @ 2:00 am By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 16, 2015 @ 2:00 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Generating scoring opportunities was not a problem for the Ashland High girls soccer team Thursday. Cashing in was. Marist scored the go-ahead goal in the 36th minute and added an insurance goal in the second half to hand Ashland its first loss of the season in Midwestern League action at North Mountain Park. “We had eight good opportunities today and only scored once,” Ashland coach Eric Wolff said. “Marist had four good opportunities and scored three goals. We just weren’t able to convert our good opportunities. Senior Samantha Lilley scored Ashland’s lone goal in the 25th minute to tie the game 1-1, getting in the way of a clearance attempt by the Marist keeper and connecting from short range. The Spartans (8-2-2, 4-0 MWL) reclaimed the lead on a wild scramble in front of the goal in the 36th minute and added an insurance goal in the 58th. Ashland (7-1-4, 2-1-1) is second-place in the MWL standings with two games to play — Tuesday at Eagle Point and Oct. 24 at Springfield. The top two teams in the final MWL standings automatically qualify for the 16-team Class 5A state tournament. Ashland coach Eric Wolff said Ashland had several near-misses while the Spartans, who have already clinched the MWL championship, cashed in when they had to. “It was a very even match," Wolff said. "There were stretches where we played very well and stretches where they played very well. They just converted better than we did.” Ashland entered the game having won six of its previous seven games, with a tie against North Eugene on Oct. 1 the only blemish in that span. But the Spartans took control of the match by scoring only three minutes into the game and never trailed. Wolff said Ashland struggled with its timing and consistency, and its lack of execution proved costly. “We had more turnovers than we normally do so that kind of hurt us in the beginning,” he said. “Our passing was not as crisp as it has been, and when you fall behind early that adds extra pressure. I don’t want to make excuses but we had lots of chances. When you play a quality opponent like Marist you have to play your best game, and we didn’t.” Prep Volleyball Ellie Case had 13 aces and five kills and Karlie Richardson 15 assists and four aces as Ashland remained white hot with a 25-3, 25-16, 25-14 win over Springfield on Thursday at Mountain Avenue Gym. The senior-night victory was Ashland’s seventh in a row, with the last five coming in straight sets, and improved the Grizzlies to 19-5 overall and 9-2 in the Midwestern League. Olivia Rooney added four kills and three aces and Payton Onesti two aces and two kills in the win. Springfield fell to 2-14 and 2-9. Joe Zavala can be reached at 541-821-0829 or [email protected].
