Almost everyone in Ashland knows about the Ashland Public Library, but fewer may know about the Friends of the Ashland Public Library. The Friends is a volunteer organization that for over 30 years has been working with the library to support its mission. The Friends provide direct service to the library and patrons: hosting programs, providing occasional special programs, even helping weed the library grounds. Members also provide funds for a wide variety of programming at the library, for adults and children. So if anyone in your family has participated in learning activities at the library with games or Legos or the summer reading programs, thank the Friends. Thank the Friends if you or someone you know has come to the library for book clubs focused on mysteries or neuroscience, for computer classes or writing workshops, or movie showings. Thank the Friends for providing some of the funding for the First Books for Babies program, which provides a filled book bag to every newborn at the Asante Ashland Community Hospital. How do the Friends do all that? Partly from donations (it’s a 501(c)(3) organization, so the donations can give you a tax deduction) and modest membership dues. But mostly, the Friends raise money by book sales. If you’ve been in the library, you’ve doubtless seen the corner on the main floor with a continually changing array of books for sale. The books are donations to the library or books the library no longer needs. Members of the Friends go through the boxes and bags and shelves of donated books all year-round, organizing them, putting some aside for occasional themed sales and culling the ones that aren’t saleable (please try not to include in your donations the book you dropped your peanut butter crackers on upside down!). But the major fundraiser is the annual Book Sale and Silent Auction (they hold back some of the best stuff ‘til then — and if you want books as holiday gifts, or a specially made gift basket, this is an opportunity). The ninth annual sale will take place this year on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-9, at the library. It takes a lot of work by a lot of volunteers to make it happen. The Friends have been soliciting donations for the auction and are busy sorting and categorizing thousands of books for the sale. The day before the sale, volunteers set up the sale room. Then, during the sale, other volunteers will be keeping the tables neat and replenished from the boxes below, taking money and helping shoppers find their way around our “pop-up bookstore.” (Some “super-volunteers” do extra duty on multiple days and tasks!) If you too like books and libraries, do come to the sale — and say hello to the Friends (who are also your neighbors) who are working there. The Friends are all set for this year’s sale, but you can donate books or items for the gift baskets for next year.
