The Ashland Plaza Restoration Project’s Facebook page is also the target of angry comments questioning the competency of the people who serve in our city government. We don’t know everyone who works for the city, but those we have met are fine people committed to doing a great job. Today, not just here but around the country, people seem evenly divided on issues with civil conversation and respect for the intentions of others in short supply. While open dialogue is necessary and healthy to formation of durable solutions, the level of anger expressed in commentary is neither helpful nor productive. Our small community can and should be better than this. Karen Hiller and Mike Bielec Ashland A national disgrace Having read in Thursday's Ashland Daily Tidings two anti-gun diatribes by E.J. Dionne, "Lets focus on the gun manufacturers," and Francis Wilkinson's (Bloomberg View) "Sons and gun lovers in America," it's a national disgrace, shame, and deplorable commentary that anti-gun elitists dance in the blood of another recent mass shooting, this time in Roseburg. As I pointed out previously in my Sept. 3 Ashland Daily Tidings letter, "Credible gun research," becoming angry, upset and irate in response to such is counterproductive. Despite this, I again choose to take a highly controversial stand on the gun issue. Naturally I was sickened by the recent carnage of insanity in Roseburg perpetrated by another depraved evil sociopath! Well, he's dead now. Fortunately, there exist credible writers far better qualified to address the gun issue than both E.J. Dionne and Francis Wilkinson. Massad Ayoob stands out. Being a gun writer, former police captain, authority on deadly force, and much more, his recent article posted online under "Massad Ayoob on Guns: Tragedy — And A Logic Test — In Oregon" Friday, Oct. 2, is timely. Other timely commentaries include "Ben Carson is Right On Guns" by Rich Lowry (National Review) for Oct. 7 is likewise credible and relevant. So is "High Demand for conceal carry classes" via KDRV Newswatch 12 (www.kdrv.com) Oct. 7. And to expose the hateful, vindictive agenda of anti-gun activists, which the establishment news media chooses to ignore, consider "Gun Rights Activist Dana Loesch Has an Absolutely Dynamite Line About Her Haters" at YouTube. Meanwhile, the Patrick Henry Society For Liberty has already staged "Roseburg Rally Goes Viral, Patriots Standing Nationwide," posted by Kit Lange. James A. Farmer Ashland A survivor's story As a 51-plus-year breast cancer survivor I applaud your publishing Survivor Stories. For many years I was the coordinator of Reach to Recovery in Jackson County and also in Contra Costa County in California, so I've been in contact with many breast cancer patients. With the many changes in treatment over the years, there is little today like there was in the '60s to the early '80s. I was 42 in 1964 when I was diagnosed and the treatment was a Halstead Radical. I'm now 94, so it worked.
