Firstly, it is not true that skaters are "not doing anything terribly wrong" when they skate downtown on sidewalks. The body of a skater weighing 120 pounds will generate 902 foot-pounds of potentially deadly kinetic energy at 15 miles per hour. Secondly, to say that "it takes a lot of discipline" to ride a skateboard, ignores the more important aspects of discipline. Discipline IS leaving an area after being warned by the manager that your skating is not welcomed. Discipline is NOT provoking others. Discipline is NOT shouting obscenities and throwing a chair with small children in the immediate area. Discipline is NOT clenching a fist as if preparing to strike while glaring with hate-filled eyes at a witness. Discipline is NOT shouting obscenities at a witness days after the incident. Discipline is NOT spitting at a witness days after the incident. Discipline IS admitting to error and correcting the behavior that caused the error. Lastly, yes, most skaters are good kids, doing what most of us did as kids - we tested limits to explore. However, Mr. Miller, regarding your son and his friends who were involved in the Market of Choice incident - your belief that they were "skating instead of getting stoned or getting into trouble" misses two obvious realities: (1) Your son IS getting into trouble, and (2) Your son's misdirected anger is his drug! John K. Fox Ashland Can't compare Iraq to WWII On the eve of the 60th anniversary of D-Day, George W. Bush has the audacity, the temerity to compare his reckless military adventure in Iraq to World War II. Hitler was sweeping across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The Japanese Empire had swept across the Far East and the Pacific. Americans and their allies were actually fighting for their freedom. From what I can see, the freedom that Bush talks about seems to be the freedom of U.S. and multinational corporations to do whatever they want, where ever they want. GW celebrates the fact that he was a poor student. He boasts that he is not an intellectual. He proudly proclaims that he doesn't read. Now it is quite apparent that he wasn't a student of history either. It is doubtful that he ever read a history book. I wonder if he even listened to his father's stories of World War II.
