--> --> Oregon in brief Officials: Suspicious device not in box PORTLAND - Part of the Portland International Airport terminal was evacuated briefly Monday morning to remove a suspicious box that officials later determined contained no illegal devices. The box had been checked in at a United Airlines ticket counter, and was being sent to Iran. Airline agents became suspicious and had police bring in bomb-sniffing dogs, said Aaron Ellis, Port of Portland spokesman. The FBI was also called in, and the area was cleared of travelers. The box set off a chemical-sensing device when scanned, and the dogs indicated three times there was something suspicious in the package, said Allen Kenitzer, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration in Seattle. The owner of the package showed up, said it was hers, and that it contained no explosives, Kenitzer said. Kenitzer said the package was later found to contain rolled-up linoleum. Kenitzer said he did not know why the linoleum set off the scanning device or alerted the dogs. The woman was questioned and released, he said. Missing boy's body washes up on surf MANZANITA - The body of a 16-year-old Rickreall boy who disappeared into the surf off Neahkahnie Beach was found drowned Monday morning. Jacob Deumling's body was found about eight miles from where he was last seen at the southern boundary of Nehalem Bay State Park. Deumling's relatives said they saw him take his shirt off and get into the water Saturday, but did not see him get out. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter spotted a submerged body in the surf around 9 p.m. that night, but waves swept the body away before a rescue swimmer could reach it. Disabled man dies after fall into river PORTLAND - A 42-year-old quadriplegic man died several days after he fell into the Willamette River while strapped in his wheelchair. Richard Frank Erzen was under water for about 13 minutes, strapped at the chest and waist to his 200-pound electric wheelchair. He was apparently waiting for someone to pick him up for a boat ride when the accident occurred. Erzen had been in a coma since the accident, and died Friday. He had been in a wheelchair since 1981, when he fell from a roof while doing construction work and injured his spinal cord, his mother said. Associated Press Email your...
