Senestraro has coached baseball for 20 years, including the past 10 in Ashland, serving last year as the senior Babe Ruth coach. Kemper said there were several other applicants, but that Senestraro's vision for the AHS baseball program along with his coaching philosophy made him the "obvious" choice. Senestraro, 45, was offered the job Friday morning and accepted it on the spot. "He knows baseball," Kemper said. "He's been around baseball his whole life so he's definitely a baseball man. But mostly with Don, his character is impeccable. He's a good, solid person who really cares about kids. He's committed to teaching life skills through athletics, so he's on the same page with all the philosophies that we have here at the high school." Making the decision easier was the fact that Senestraro is also on board with another key Ashland High philosophy: getting involved with the local American Legion team - the Pilots. Senestraro was named the Pilots' new head coach in December, succeeding Hank Munn. "I'm really, really excited," Senestraro said. "I love baseball and am looking forward to the challenge. I want to branch down to Babe Ruth and Little League. I plan on meeting with all those group heads and try to get a plan together to make this an actual program." In other Ashland High coaching news, Kemper said he will probably announce who the school's new head track and field coach will be on Tuesday. Former coach Bob Julian Jr. stepped down to concentrate on coaching the Grizzlies' distance runners in December.
