Sam keeps busy with an assortment of classes (including AP Literature and Creative Writing), work as a tutor in helping students with their math and performing duties as President of the Knit Wits club. She is also a National Honors Society and Mu Alpha Theta member, participates in the chamber orchestra and volunteers with orchestra programs. She has been a Fresh Start Councilor. Her senior project has been telling a story through pictures and poems about a trip to New Mexico, many of which have been displayed at the Ashland Art Walk. Last year Sam managed a student AHS branch of Rogue Credit Union, and has worked at the downtown office of Rogue Credit Union. While she was developing financial skills, she was given the NCTE Award in recognition of her writing. In January, Sam was a featured poet at a William Stafford poetry reading. She has been accepted at the SOU Honors College, where she plans to major in English and education so that she can become a teacher. Kiwanis honors a senior student from the Ashland High School each month during the school year. Each Student of the Month receives an award certificate and $50 in cash. In May, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with the $1,000 Tommy Laird Kiwanis College scholarship.
