LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Feb. 2 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Feb. 2, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted Feb. 2, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News Dismayed by comics switch I’m finally moved to comment after I saw that you are removing “For Better or Worse.” A weighty subject, I know. I’ve enjoyed reading the comics with breakfast for many years, starting the day with a smile. "Rhymes with Orange" will be entertaining, but if you want to remove something that has been in reruns for waay too many years, get rid of "Peanuts" or "Garfield." They are so moldy and stale! When Charles Schulz died 12 years or so ago, I thought I would be spared more of his recycled, unfunny jokes. "For Better or Worse" continues to bring a smile — who can’t relate to raising kids! I like that the Sunday Tribune puts the three least funny comics on the front page so it’s easy to jump over them. I know this can’t change things, but I feel better for venting! I also want to say that the Tidings has become quite a wonderful local paper. Always interesting articles relating to Ashland. And I will read anything written by Chris Honore. I love his movie reviews and opinion pieces. He’s one of the best journalists I know. Keep up the good work! Hannah Brehmer, Ashland Connect the dots We are reminded often that a large earthquake is overdue in Jackson County. Sadly, this risk does not seem to figure into the analysis in the Jordan Cove Energy Project. Let’s connect the dots and ask for a long-term risk/benefit analysis of this project! I have been in the medical field for 37 years. When a new treatment or new drug comes on the market, it is tested before approval. After market, research is done to monitor the risk/benefit profile of the treatment or drug. Sadly, many times the risks outweigh the benefits long term, and the treatment or drug is withdrawn. In the case of energy projects, it appears that no one is even looking at the long-term risks of something as important as the Jordan Cove LNG Project. This project will involve a 230-mile gas pipeline right through Jackson County, crossing 400 waterways, which would significantly harm fish habitat during installation, and sustain much more damage long-term should that earthquake come near this pipeline. Think about the 2011 Japan tsunami and the nuclear disaster at Fukushima. Connect the dots. Gas pipes leak and break, water gets contaminated. Gas explodes, people die. It appears that it is no one’s job to determine the long-term risks of such a project. Oregon DEQ tells us it is only charged with analyzing the risks to water quality in installing the pipeline. We need to make our voices loudly heard. Look up Rogue Riverkeeper for how to help.
