When a responsible adult sees young children playing in a busy street, what should that adult do? Immediately order them out of the street! Do those kids deserve our support? Of course they do! But their reasons for playing in the street make as much sense as the actual reasons we are still in Iraq. And then there is our other war - "the battle over whether America remains Judeo-Christian or becomes secular like Europe" (A second civil war worth fighting: Dennis Prager, 04/01). This narrow-minded view reminds me of a conversation that I once had with another fundamental Christian. He claimed that anyone who didn't accept Jesus would not be allowed into Heaven. I inquired about all of the Native Americans who had lived in the Americas for thousands of years before becoming "discovered." These people respected and lived in harmony with nature, but they could not possibly accept Jesus because they were unaware of Christianity. The Christian hesitated a moment and then said: "It doesn't matter. If they didn't accept Jesus, they didn't enter Heaven." My prayer: "God, please don't send me to the same place that you send these fundamental Christians!" Robert Simms Ashland What's the point if now enforced My husband and I moved to Ashland a year ago. We have understood the law regarding crosswalk and intersection crossings. That would be: Pedestrians have the right of way; vehicles are to stop for pedestrians as stated in the Oregon Drivers' Manual. In my daily walks I have, as is common here, encountered vehicles that do not stop. So, what's new? Well, the point of this letter is to report an interesting incident that occurred here in Ashland on the main street of town. As I was crossing the intersection to get to the Washington Mutual Bank, the cars, just kept going...not unusual. But what was unusual was the policeman on his motorcycle who passed me by along with the cars, and as he did he slowly turned his head and made eye contact. So, what is the point of following a law that the law does not even follow? And yes, I had entered the intersection and was about 1/3 of the way across. Mission Viejo, CA 92691 There is more we need to know We should all know more about the plane loads of Saudi Arabian Nationals and Bin Laden family members that were allowed to leave the United States at this crucial time, just shortly after 9/11. Why were they given special treatment? Price Bandar of Saudi Arabia was asked to come to the White House. The President welcomed him. They spent some time together. Then a few days later Bandar helped arrange to get the Saudi and Bin Laden family members out of the United States. Their move was made under the supervision of the FBI; it caused public consternation. Bandar has a very close relationship with the Bush family that has been long standing. He was involved with Bush Sr. during the Reagan administration. (Source- New Yorker, March 24; Time, March 24) Mildred M. Kurlatt Rogue River Doyle is an annoying ad Reading Doyle spout off on political ads (Saturday, April 3) is a bit like the pot calling the kettle black. We have had to endure his political and social remarks since you added him to the weather page. Please, do us a favor, quit trying to be a commentator, stick to the weather, and cease and desist on the verbosity. It's political season and I, personally, do not want to be bombarded with Doyle's political ranting when all I want is to read the weather. Love his weather reports, less than impressed with the "Doyle Says"; has the Daily Tidings considered putting him on the Op-Ed page where he belongs? Doonesbury is not on the comic page, "Doyle Says" shouldn't be there either.
