"Coach (Dave) Kitchell said it right," Ashland head coach David Coldiron said. "He said, 'Hey coach, that's a Grizz win.'" The Grizzlies (2-0) scored all their points in the final five minutes, including a one-yard quarterback sneak by junior Beau Lewis that tied the game, 6-all, with 4:48 to go. Lewis' plunge came one play after his 64-yard pass to junior Steve Jorgenson gave the Grizzlies new life. Ashland's final drive was set up by Eric Brown's fumble on a punt return. The Grizzlies recovered at the Gophers' 43-yard line with under a minute left. Ashland then drove 23 yards in three plays to set up the winning score. McNamara, a junior, played defensive end for the Grizzlies most of the way, but was forced into kicking duty when starter Logan Bishop injured his foot. The Grizzlies overcame several miscues and bad breaks, including a fumble that Gresham recovered at the goal line and a roughing the kicker penalty that gave the Gophers a first-down with 7:58 left. After a scoreless first half, Gresham (1-1) got on the board on Brown's 12-yard run with 6:31 left in the third. The extra-point was blocked, but the Gophers returned the favor after Lewis' score. Ashland passed for 209 of its 250 yards in total offense. The win sends Ashland flying into the start of the Southern Oregon Conference season on the heels of two comeback victories. The Grizzlies face No. 1-ranked North Medford Friday in Medford in the SOC-opener for both teams. "I think it's as good as we can be, going into North Medford 2-0," Coldiron said. "But the thing I'm really happy about, really, is that they're starting to come together as a team. Kids are making adjustments on the fly, so things are really starting to click, and the kids are starting to understand the system that I brought." The Black Tornado (2-1) will be coming off its first loss of the season, 21-14 to Lake Oswego - a defeat that will almost certainly cost North its spot atop the polls.
