OUR VIEW Our View: Retain Marsh on council DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Oct. 11, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Oct. 11, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News The race for Position 6 on the Ashland City Council presents voters with a choice between Pam Marsh, the incumbent, and Theo White, a political newcomer. Her experience and record of community involvement make Marsh the clear choice. White, who has lived in Ashland for 10 years, has a bachelor's degree in health, physical education and leadership from Southern Oregon University and a master's in special education from the University of Phoenix. He is an academic tutor at SOU. White criticizes the way the council handled a proposed ban on openly carrying firearms downtown, saying it should have rejected the plan outright as unconstitutional. He has no experience on boards or committees, and expresses some distrust of city leaders, suggesting he might not be ready to step into a city councilor role. Marsh has lived in Ashland for 20 years. A former planning commissioner in Palo Alto, Calif., she is director of the Ashland Emergency Food Bank, and she and her husband and son own the Greensprings Inn. She was appointed to the council in 2012 to fill a vacancy and is running for her first full term.  Marsh says she is pleased with how the community addressed the open carry issue, holding meetings between gun rights supporters and those who wanted more restrictions. She said the meetings led to increased understanding on both sides. Marsh says she's pleased with the spirit of collaboration on the City Council and excited about developing strategic plans for the next five years. Voters should keep her in office to continue that work.
