But I must say I’m completely against a rematch between boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. The two fighters took part in the highly-publicized “Fight of the Century” last Saturday in Las Vegas. The fight generated millions of dollars in revenue and high ratings from boxing fans across the world. Just like most boxing fans, I’ve looked forward to this matchup for years. Mayweather and Pacquiao are two of the best fighters of this generation, and I was hoping both would have a fight to remember on Saturday. But in my opinion, the “Fight of the Century” ended up being a complete “Failure of the Century.” It didn’t live up to the hype at all, as it pitted an aging and injured Pacquiao against an undefeated Mayweather. It’s simply a fight that ended up happening five years too late. If both boxers were in their primes, it would have been more competitive. People expected fireworks, but instead we were stuck with a dud of a show. Most fans spent $100 to watch the event live, and the ones I’ve talked to said it was a waste of money. Mayweather won the fight in an decision, but it was never a challenge. Mayweather used his speed and elusiveness to dodge most of Pacquiao’s punches, and neither boxer physically dominated the fight. I have to admit that I wasn’t impressed with the match, but I believe Mayweather won it fair and square. In the end, Mayweather landed more punches and took Pacquiao out of his comfort zone. At times, it looked like Pacquiao was fighting a ghost because none of his punches were connecting. He landed only 81 of 429 punches, while Mayweather connected on 148 of 435. Mayweather’s strengths overwhelmed Pacquiao’s weaknesses. I know most fans hate Mayweather’s style of boxing, but it is a successful strategy. In boxing, if you can hit and avoid being punched, you have a better chance at winning. Mayweather was smart by sticking to his formula, and it helped him improve to 48-0 overall. Both fighters showed signs of their greatness during the event, but it just simply wasn’t enough. After the fight, there were talks that both fighters will seek a rematch. If it happens, I’m sure it will once again get plenty of hype. But I won’t be watching because I don’t think there is a need for a rematch. I think both boxers’ glory days are behind them, and at this point, they are just looking to collect big paydays before hanging up their boxing gloves for good. I wish boxing could go back to the old days when you got several epic fights per year instead of every few years. You know the days when guys like Mike Tyson, George Foreman, “Sugar” Ray Leonard, Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Joe Frazier and many others fought on legendary fight cards. But those days are long gone. I’m sure a rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao would be attractive to some, but like Roberto Duran said in his legendary fight against Leonard in 1980, I will simply have to say “No Más” if asked to watch it.
