Little did I know what I was in for. The TSA agent at Rogue Valley International Medford Airport told me to go to Portland. They are not trained to or authorized to take my fingerprints or my check for $85 here in Medford. That means a 600-mile round trip, overnight stay, airport parking fee, gas and meal costs. Not good. I called the local offices of Senators Wyden and Merkley and Congressman Walden. Lots of excuses why it cannot be done in Medford. No funding, personnel not trained, part-time agents. Maybe someday in the future. Bah, humbug! Taking fingerprints is now done digitally, not rocket science. The $85 fee is a money-maker for the TSA. OK, I am not taking no for an answer. Airport Director Bern Case returned my call and expressed sympathy. Bern stated that he hoped to get a mobile TSA unit sometime in the future to come to Medford to issue passes. Not willing to give up, I talked to Ms. Meyer in Senator Wyden's Portland office. She thanked me and said she would pass it on to the senator. This should not be a one-man campaign. If you feel you should be able to obtain a TSA pre-check pass here in Medford, call Ms. Meyer at 503-326-7525. If enough people call we can do this. The procedure is simple; complete the pre-check form online and present it to the agent who will take your fingerprints and check for $85. Takes less than five minutes. The wait in a pre-check security line at major airports is also less than five minutes 92 percent of the time.
