Jennifer Squires | Ashland Daily Tidings Home gutted by early morning fire “Beeeep, beeeep, beeeep, pause, beeeep ...” The smoke detector at the gray and blue manufactured home on the end of Jaquelyn Street sounded as Ashland Fire and Rescue Chief Keith Woodley examined the scene of a early-morning two-alarm fire. Just before 2 a.m. today, the woman living in the three-bedroom house called 911 and said her roof was on fire. When Ashland fire fighters got to the blaze, the attic was engulfed in flames and the woman was safely outside, according to AFR Cpt. Bob Cockell. It took 15 firefighters from the two Ashland stations and Jackson County Fire District 5 about 15 minutes to control the blaze, according to Cockell. Four engines raced to the scene, where firefighters had to pull out the ceiling to put out the flames. “When that happens, your expectations to limit the damage are reduced because you know you’re going to have to pull out the insulation,” Woodley said. The sound of the front-porch light shattering had woken the resident up long before the smoke detector caught smoke wafting down from the attic. The ceiling was on the verge of caving in and the woman, according to Cockell, had gotten out just in time. “It’s fortunate that the lamp broke,” Cockell said. The woman left the charred house to stay with neighbors, but firefighters remained at the scene until about 5 a.m. putting out the spot fires that popped up all night, according to Woodley. They were also able to salvage a lot of the contents of the house. The fire may have been caused by the front-porch light that broke and alerted the woman to get out of the house, although the investigation had not been finished as of press time.
