September is coined National Preparedness Month (NPM) and this year’s theme is “Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How.” This is a striking statement if you consider that disasters can strike at any time without warning. Natural and man-made disasters are common throughout the world and extremely personal for those impacted. The devastation can cause a multitude of cascading events for individuals both short and long-term. We can all take action to prepare! We are all able to

Imagine Ashland as a thriving city of peace. What would that look like? How would it feel? Can we envision a thriving economy year-round, with enough traffic even in the winter months to pay the bills? How about picturing important local issues like homelessness peacefully resolved. Imagine the wealth of knowledge accumulated by the city’s more experienced residents being exchanged generously with younger people who, in turn, share the increasingly valuable wisdom that digital natives can

I’m grateful for David Wick and Irene Kai’s invitation to share my thoughts for this column on the culture of peace. As we gathered near the World Peace Flame on Nov. 11, we returned Peace Corps volunteers (RPCV) who were dubbed “vets” and honored by the Veterans for Peace and the Ashland Culture of Peace Commission, the community, the Rogue Valley Peace Choir and the guest speakers were all part of the display of gratitude in the culture of peace. There is no other more commonly used and highly criticized weed killer in the world than glyphosate-based products (GBP’s, aka Roundup). We have been repeatedly told it causes cancer and is associated with other health maladies while industry vehemently denies the chemical has toxicity. Recently a person who suffers from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma caused by two accidental exposures to Roundup during his work was awarded $289 million by a California jury by a 12-0 vote. Jurors found that

The City Council lessened the restrictions on Transportation Network Companies (TNC), such as Uber and Lyft, to operate within the city at Tuesday’s meeting. Previously, an ordinance was passed to allow the TNCs to operate in the city, but Uber and Lyft did not want to apply for a contract within Ashland because of the city’s limitations. These limitations — a vehicle inspection requirement and a wheelchair accessible vehicle requirement — will be lifted with the revision

What are we doing? Thank you for the article, “Bipartisan economists call for carbon tax” in the Ashland Tidings Jan. 17. It gave a simple explanation of the Citizens Climate Lobby-sponsored solution for climate change, the Senate (S 3791) and House (HR 7173) proposed Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend bills. It addresses the what, the why and how such a measure would serve all of us, not just a portion of our citizenry. It also fits into the anthem of what the marching Ashland El
