We live in two times, the natural and the historical. In this season of contraction, historical life seems to me a weary slog toward an ever-receding goal. My garden promises a surer satisfaction. Spring always arrives. I’ve manured my beds; I’ve planted more bulbs. History is a continuing nightmare. What’s so depressing is that it no longer need be. Collectively, humankind possesses the knowledge and material wealth to end the scourges of famine, plague and war. Pain and loss

The Ashland Forest Resiliency Project team burned 942 acres of slash in the town’s watershed over the fall, making a significant dent in the 2,500 acres it hopes to torch during controlled burns leading up to the start of the 2019 fire season. AFR’s goal: to rid the watershed of ladder fuels that can lead to catastrophic fires. The prescribed burns gobbled up 47,100 “piles of sticks” that resulted from thinning work by Lomakatsi Restoration Project, Grayback Forestry, Rog

With many mountain roads closed for the winter, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is warning drivers to use common sense when it comes to following driving directions from a GPS device or cellphone map app. Sheriff’s Office search and rescue deputies have already responded to calls involving people who followed directions provided by their phone’s mapping system — and ended up stranded on closed or unmaintained roads. Sgt. Shawn Richards pointed to the example of Forest

The new year brings a new look to the Ashland Tidings: We’ve dropped the “Daily” from the name. The change streamlines the name while also honoring our roots. The paper was known as the Ashland Tidings from its first edition on June 17, 1876, through 1912, when the paper began publishing a weekly edition in addition to the daily. So it made perfect sense to distinguish the two as the Ashland Weekly Tidings and Ashland Daily Tidings until the weekly ceased publication a few year

In recent years, I’ve had a way of coming up with top album choices that haven’t been on the radar of most publications. This year, I can’t for the life of me understand how my album of the year, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite’s “No Mercy in This Land,” hasn’t shown up on any best albums lists I’ve seen so far (It just, however, got nominated for a Grammy.) Perhaps I hear things no one else notices. Maybe I’m clueless when it comes to rec

A 72-unit studio apartment complex can go ahead, city councilors decided Dec. 18, but some neighbors plan to appeal the decision to the state Land Use Board of Appeals. The council unanimously rejected eight of the 12 objections raised by appellants to city Planning Commission approval of the MidTown Lofts project at 188 Garfield St. Two others were rejected after tie-breaking votes by Mayor John Stromberg when the council split 3-3, and the other two found only Councilor Stefani Seffinger in op

After hearing from hundreds of residents about the impacts of two smoke-filled summers in a row, Jackson County commissioners plan to lobby Oregon legislators for more firefighting resources and urge federal agencies to battle all wildfires during the fire season. Commissioners worked out their action plan Thursday after holding a Dec. 11 public hearing about wildfire and smoke impacts. Residents described a host of negative effects, including health problems, economic losses and being trapped i

More than 20 years in the making, the Siskiyou Rest Area and Welcome Center near Exit 14 on Interstate 5 is set to open this spring. About 60 percent of people who drive into Oregon come in by that route, according to Ashland Chamber of Commerce Marketing Director Katharine Cato. “We welcome so many visitors through that door,” Cato said. “It will support better information, education and wayfinding. Gallerie Karon, for 16 years an enduring Ashland Railroad District showcase for mostly local art, has expanded by 600 square feet, creating a cozy, museum-like space where art is keyed by spotlights and period furniture, placing visitors in the time and place where it was created. Located at A and Fourth streets, the gallery has a new “secret passage” leading from the 2,000-square-foot main space to The Feathered Wing gallery, as it’s called by owner Karen Wasser. Although the

Police chief responds I offer this letter in response to the one submitted by Tom Dimitri. I remain apologetic to the community for the improper arrest of the young man on Nov. 26. As I have openly acknowledged since Nov. 27, as soon the mistake came to light, the Ashland Police Department failed this man, his family and the entire community. This failure came about because the officers on scene did not appropriately investigate a criminal complaint that they received at a local business. An emp

Progressives have some intellectual and moral work to do. What are cast as political challenges to liberals and the left are also philosophical problems. Resolving them is essential to sorting out the tensions among the movement’s goals and establishing its priorities. It comes down to this: Whom do progressives think they’re fighting for? It’s a question joined most pointedly in arguments over “identity politics.” The debate itself is flawed because it’s not

One of Ashland senior services’ goals for the new year is getting the word out. A recent analysis of needs within the community revealed most seniors don’t realize services are available for them in Ashland, says newly appointed Senior Services Superintendent Isleen Glatt. “We provide some things, but the range of needs is met by connecting people to resources that exist for them, many of them free or low cost; which they had no idea could meet their needs especially as a budge

I attended a meeting last Monday night at a local church. When I had opened the church door to set up for the meeting, I had heard what I thought were groans. I was alone, so I called out “is anyone here” before entering the meeting room but there was no answer. We held our meeting and as the meeting was ending, it was announced that there is a “weird” “drunk” man outside so be careful. It was suggested that we leave in pairs. I did leave with another person a
