The lives of our children | Daily Tidings

Ashland Daily Tidings (Ashland, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-09-04

Part Three As mentioned previously, the Sunday New York Times Magazine devoted an entire issue to an extraordinary piece of narrative journalism by Nathaniel West, titled “Losing Earth.” A single line, in bold white centered on a black page, said, “Thirty years ago we could have saved the planet.” What followed was an explication of a decade that, in effect, led to four words: We chose not to. The why of it is both elegantly simple and tragically complex. West explains that today, in our lifetim

Wild Side: Working through smoke and grief | Daily Tidings

Ashland Daily Tidings (Ashland, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-09-02

Take a breath. Nice, isn’t it? As I sent my 7-year-old off to his first day of school Monday morning, blue skies were above and the smell of fall was in the air. It felt like things were back to normal. Kids took off the masks and were playing in the park in the afternoon. There was a feeling of content that hadn’t been felt for over a month. It is tempting to forget our lost summer and the damage that smoke and evacuations have done to our health, our local economy, and our collective psyche. B

Ashland Daily Tidings (Ashland, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-08-31

School District 2 in Southern Oregon was established in 1854 in the Griffin Creek area. Its first school was the Van Dorn School, which had 12 students who attended for three months in a log warehouse shared with muleskinners.  The Indian Wars forced cancellation of classes the following year. The warehouse burned, so District 2 built the Heber Grove School. By 1866 there were 25 pupils and the teacher was paid $110. Gus Newbury was hired to teach there in 1889. He was paid $200 to teach al

E.J. Dionne Jr.: Why Trump isn’t fighting the Facebook bots | Daily Tidings

Ashland Daily Tidings (Ashland, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-08-02

Here is the issue raised by Facebook’s revelations this week about disinformation that we need to face squarely: The political interests of the president of the United States coincide with the purposes of foreign forces using social media to divide us along the lines of race and culture. President Trump’s refusal to make combating Russian interference a high priority, despite warnings from inside his own administration about the dangers, is obviously a scandal. It is also a telltale sign that ou

WasteNot: SOU move out — A waste prevention success story | Daily Tidings

Ashland Daily Tidings (Ashland, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-08-01

The end of each school year in June at the residence halls at Southern Oregon University (SOU) signifies for many students time to pack up for the summer with plans to return to campus housing in the fall or to a new home or apartment in the region. Not surprisingly, this annual migration of people and their stuff creates a sizeable pile of trash or resources (depending on how it’s treated). When a year of “stuff” doesn’t travel with them to the next chapter in their lives, its gotta go somewher

A growing opportunity | Daily Tidings

Ashland planning commissioners have an opportunity to increase the supply of small, more-affordable rental housing units in a neighborhood that is ideal for it — if they offer incentives to developers to make that happen. At issue is the Transit Triangle Strategy, a plan designed to guide infill development in the three-sided area bounded by Ashland Street, Siskiyou Boulevard and Tolman Creek Road. The area already is home to the most popular local stop for Rogue Valley Transportation District b

Where to move? We are sweltering in the Southern Oregon heat and smoke, with severely unhealthy air now seeming to be the new normal, canceling many outdoor events and causing people to want to move elsewhere. But where can we move? The rest of the world is burning up, too — Sweden, Greece, wildfires in Australia in April, the Melbourne water supply in danger due to “collapse” of forests caused by logging. Excessive rain and floods in other parts of the world, another heat wave in Europe while t

BORDENTOWN, N.J. — “Do you feel like there is a steady hand at the wheel? Do you feel like you’re in good hands right now?” Andy Kim, a Democrat challenging Republican Rep. Tom MacArthur for a congressional seat in south-central New Jersey, sees these questions as pivotal to November’s election. They are singularly appropriate after a week of dangerous chaos ignited by President Trump’s European trip and new indictments in the Russia probe. Culture of Peace: For now, we can’t be patriots | Daily Tidings

When we founded the Ashland Culture of Peace Commission , had we been more interested in polemics than civics, we might have named it the Counterculture of Peace Commission. Not that peace is counter-cultural in Ashland. Before ACPC formed in 2015, Ashland aspired to be “a city marked by mutually respectful and caring relationships among all its residents and between its residents and the natural environment on which we depend” (to quote language in the city proclamation blessing our endeavor),

There is so much to write about. I stare at the blank screen and wonder where to begin and find much of what comes to mind is dispiriting, OMG-provoking, or elicits an abiding sadness for our country. I can only hope that all of us are paying attention, for there is a lot to absorb, weigh and resist. Is it hyperbole to write that Trump is taking a wrecking ball to our decades-long western alliances, meaning Europe, NATO and the G7? Ditto our nation’s institutions such as the press, FBI, DOJ and

Ashland Contemporary Theatre's quietly rich production of "Mr. Williams and Miss Wood" offers a poignant backstage view of playwright Tennessee Williams. The two-character, two-act play by Max Wilk chronicles the close, yet often strained, 30-year relationship between Williams and his agent and friend Audrey Wood. Alexei Menedes plays Williams, Vanessa Hopkins plays Wood, and Jeannine Grizzard directs this thoughtful and lovely play. It tells the story of how Wood mentored Williams' genius into

I’ve been both pleased and puzzled by the media coverage and public concern for the 12 youngsters and their soccer coach trapped in a cave in Thailand. Pleased, because any display of compassion testifies to our better natures, and compassion across national boundaries evidences a growing sense of universal human solidarity. Puzzled, because every day the lives of far greater numbers of our brothers and sisters are intentionally jeopardized, yet their plights don’t impinge on public consciousnes
