A commercial truck crash this morning on Interstate 5 below the Siskiyou Pass slowed northbound traffic for more than seven hours, but two lanes are open now. Oregon State Police responded along with ODOT workers as traffic backed up along I-5. ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming said these kinds

A happy taxpayer Have you ever wondered how your Ashland city taxes are spent? I received a vivid lesson in that subject recently. A few days ago while working in my office, I saw a cloud of smoke covering the living room ceiling. After a quick, fruitless look around for the source, I called 911 for the Fire Department. Within three minutes (three minutes!) I could hear the fire department siren, then turned around to see a firefighter at the back door. Two minutes later there were two additiona

Old fire trucks hate to die. The big old things have a lot of romance and memories attached to them — and have helped save many a home and life. Ashland’s long-abandoned 1946 Ford fire truck is no exception. Among its legends is that it fell into Ashland Creek during the big flood of 1948 when the bridge it was on collapsed, but its red warning light continued burning for hours, earning it the nickname of “the amphibious fire engine.” The rugged but worn-looking beast

When you walk into Julek’s Polish Kitchen, you know immediately you’ve discovered authentic Eastern European cuisine and are in for an exceptional dining experience. There are scents of dill, vinegar, rich savory and sweet notes that tease the appetite. Tables showcase fine embroidery, lacework and cutwork, and family portraits with big, old-fashioned, elaborate frames hang on the walls. Soothing instrumentals, Gypsy violins perhaps, sound light to the ear. Bogusia Antczak opened Julek’s in 2012

Lets pretend that I was granted some wishes. After world peace, providing healthcare, adequate housing, food and education for all citizens, I would then wave my magic wand for the disappearance of single-use consumer disposables. *POOF* and they would be gone! Until the current economy shifts, thoughtful consumers can influence change by choosing to refuse to use single-use disposables in favor of durable, reusable items. Ultimately, a transformation needs to take place away from the current wa

With warm weather in the valley, a hint of smoke in the air and fire season right around the corner, now is the time to address wildfire preparedness. May has been designated as Wildfire Awareness Month, an important month to learn and become better prepared for wildfire. Every year thousands of wildfires burn millions of acres across the nation. Recently, Ashland has experienced the Siskiyou and Oak Knoll fires. Our reality is that it's not if, but when, the next fire will threaten our communit

Ashland may be one of the "greenest" towns in the state of Oregon, yet many residents are unaware of the legalization of greywater systems in the state, said Karen Taylor, Siskiyou Permaculture partner, at a “laundry-to-landscape” workshop Sept. 30 on Ashland Mine Road. “Greywater is slightly used water … but it’s still good, it’s not contaminated and it actually has more nutrients in it than when it started,” Taylor said. “And so, itȁ

Upholding democratic values is anathema to believing any state has “a right to exist.” People have rights, and to secure our rights we make political arrangements. States are the very imperfect results of these compromises. The struggle for democracy and human rights always continues after the creation of the state and in conflict with most political leaders. Politicians are not usually interested in furthering justice and democracy — or, as is too often the case, prefer to take away many of the

The Planning Commission made the right call in sending on a proposal to expand the designated Wildfire Hazard Zone to encompass the entire city. Some details might warrant tweaking, but the overall concept is sound. Anyone who doubts that Ashland is at risk from a major wildfire need only reflect on how close the Klamathon fire came to sweeping down on the city. The existing hazard zone encompasses the wildland-urban interface, where residential neighborhoods merge with the Ashland Watershed wel
