Editor’s Note: Former Ashland Daily Tidings Editor John Enders has actively supported Ashland’s Sister City relations with Guanajuato, Mexico, for years and participated in the 30th and 40th anniversaries in 1999 and 2009. In the column below, Enders, author of the book titled “Lithia Park: The Heart and Soul of Ashland,” invites everyone to help make next year’s Sister City golden jubilee a great success. When President Dwight Eisenhower introduced his People-to-People program in 1956, he said,

TALENT — From analyzing a simulated crime scene to flying drones and setting off rockets, students at Talent Middle School turned a few days of summer into a learning experience they’ll likely not soon forget. The STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) camp last week was put on by the nonprofit Talent Maker City in conjunction with the Phoenix-Talent School District and with a grant from the Southern Oregon Education Service District. Course offerings included CSI Forensic Scien

If opponents of a proposed cell tower on the roof of Southern Oregon University’s Science Building want to stop new transmission devices, they need to work to change federal law, not rail at Planning Commission members who have no power to block the installation. Verizon wants to install the tower to improve cellphone coverage. Some opponents say they suffer adverse health effects from electromagnetic radiation, but Federal Communications Commission rules prohibit local governments from consider

We will never know what was said between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in their private summit in Helsinki on Monday. What we do know is what was said in their joint news conference. It wasn’t pretty. Trump refused to support the findings of his own intelligence agencies that Russian operatives interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, he bashed the FBI, and said he accepted Putin’s denial that Russia had anything to do with election interference. As Southern Oregon grapples with a rising number of overdoses from opioids and illegal drug use in general, Ashland police are quietly doing what they can to help those struggling with addiction — and that means helping them into treatment, not into a jail cell. Since last October, the department has implemented the Gateway Program, modeled after one in Gloucester, Massachusetts. That city’s Angel Program shifted the focus from arresting drug users to helping them connect with treatment program

Magical realism in literature has long been associated with two rather contradictory qualities. On the one hand, there is the expectation of a realistic tone. On the other, there is the anticipation of fantastical events. Any audience that is open to the often stringent requirements of this historically rich and spiritually evocative genre might be expected to approach it with some trepidation; the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende, and Jorge Luis Borges are as dense and challengin

We have seen in recent days the high drama and polarization of our society’s consciousness played out in our government’s stage. This elevated drama is nothing new: Someone has done another person a wrong, they are in trouble, he said-she said, and Mother (the authorities) doesn’t know what to do about it. Our society as a whole and others around the world are being drawn into another episode of “Who Shot JR?” Are we are molding our lives from this drama? This, of course, is what’s on the surfac

I would like to respond to the column by Herb Rothschild Jr. published on Oct. 6. He implies that Jessica Gomez may be hiding her status as a Republican. I have never had anyone introduce themselves as their party affiliation. In a political race I believe that is clearly defined, and she changed her party well before she worked in my office. As far as me designating Jessica my heir, that gives me way too much credit. Part of being in business, and a good leader, is that you are always looking f

Is anybody else wishing that when we get election propaganda, it had to say who actually sent it and who paid for it? I was thinking about this the other day when, like many households in Jackson County, mine received our first piece of mail for the November election. From the way it was addressed, and from what other residents have told me, it was apparently targeted to women. It was sent by “Friends of Jessica Gomez,” who is running for State Senate District 3 against Jeff Golden. The first pan

Achieving peace in the age of Donald Trump might seem elusive, unlikely, and even impossible. Millions of us are pointing fingers of blame and judgment, apparently oblivious to the disturbing meaning in Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s comment, “If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human

Revisit “Kornfield Kounty” when Rogue Valley Harmonizers presents “Hee Haw and Harmonies,” a salute to the long-running CBS country and western-themed variety show. With a flair for cornball comedy, the Harmonizers will include “Where, Oh Where, Are You Tonight?” — made popular by “Hee Haw’s” Gordie Tapp and Archie Campbell as “Pfft, You Were Gone.” “It was a gag song,” says Harmonizers’ chairman Michael Biggs. “The TV show would have different guest stars sing it, including Johnny Cash, Loretta
