Seeking, craving, grasping onto whatever it is we think will make us happy — that is the oldest of delusions. It seems justified because the only alternative seems to be being the victim, grinning and bearing it. If we ever question it at all. We tend to get caught up in the seeking so much that we have no time to question what might be driving it. But it is, in truth, a sort of madness, a falling out of real sanity, which is true contentment with What IS. If you are lost in the trance of seekin

The vibe Saturday morning at La Baguette Music Cafe in Ashland was of hot coffee and cool jazz as a pick-up band played the standards for the crowd. There wasn’t so much finger snapping as you might have found in a 1960s coffeehouse, but plenty of toes were tapping. La Baguette owner Merrill Smith played stand-up bass with regulars Tony Brussat on guitar and vocals, and Joe Diamond on trumpet and vocals. Brussat, a member of Band du Pays, an Ashland-based swing band, served up a variety of tunes

Hearing of an appeal claiming a proposed new cell phone tower on the roof of a building at Southern Oregon University will created “deadly and serious” consequences due to supposed use of 5G technology and that planners’ approval violated Oregon’s planning goals is set for tonight before the Ashland Planning Commission . The tower would actually use 4G, not 5G, technology, and required notifications were made to project neighbors and others, city planning staff says in its staff report , while a

The Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission Monday agreed to allow a shower and laundry trailer to operate one morning a week at The Grove on East Main Street, pending issuance of a conditional use permit. The nonprofit Ashland Community Resource Center (ACRC) got donations and a state grant to buy a new $44,000 trailer, mainly to accommodate the homeless, but it is also available for Pacific Crest Trail hikers or anyone else, said ACRC Executive Director Leigh Madsen. The previous such trailer wa

An interpretive sign was installed and dedicated where Wagner Creek meets Highway 99 adjacent to SOS Plumbing in Talen t on Saturday, June 23. The Food and Drug Administration’s approval of a new prescription anti-seizure medication derived from cannabis just might be the nudge another federal agency needs to reclassify marijuana and allow more research into its potential benefits — and risks. The FDA on Monday approved the new drug, Epidiolex, to treat two rare forms of epilepsy that cause severe seizures. The medication contains cannabidiol (CBD), one of the two main components of cannabis. The other, delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (TH

A sometimes boisterous crowd pleaded in vain Tuesday for the Ashland Planning Commission to reverse staff approval of a permit for Verizon to put a cell phone tower atop Southern Oregon University’s Science Building. Appellants cited a range of ailments they say are caused by overexposure to the devices, with Alan Rathsam, an engineer, naming tumors, brain and breast cancer, reproductive impairment and bone loss. However, Commission Chairman Roger Pearce stated that a 1996 Federal Communication

I was encouraged to take up this column again by thinking my way to the following conclusion: Any analysis of our nation’s current political situation, including Trump’s surprising victory, must start by realizing that we live in a declining empire, and Americans aren’t happy about it. Much of what I’ve subsequently written has elaborated on that insight. In this column I want to reflect on what Trump’s “America First” pledge, which played well with the 2016 electorate and still plays well with

Want a good spot to view Wednesday’s parade? Just don’t try to do it prior to the night before, the city of Ashland is reminding early birds. The city asks Fourth of July parade spectators not to place chairs, blankets and other placeholders on public property prior to the evening of July 3. Public property includes the median on Siskiyou Boulevard, park rows (that area between the sidewalk and the curb) and curbs of Siskiyou Boulevard and East Main Street, plus the Plaza and other public areas.

Percussionists have a beat, a rhythm in their hands and feet, in their minds and souls. They are rarely still and will pound on anything that makes a sound, even objects that barely give a whisper. New York composer Joseph Bertolozzi is compelled to make music from buildings and bridges and premiered his latest composition, “ Tower Music : Musique de la Tour ” this week at the Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University . Sinclair Lewis’ darkly prescient novel, “It Can’t Happen Here,” chronicles the rise of a populist, fascist president in America who sounds eerily similar to our current “leader.” Although the novel is hyperbolic and often satirical, the parallels to what is occurring currently in this country are chilling — and it was published in 1935. Against the backdrop of that novel, I was stirred to consider a “modest proposal,” reminiscent of Jonathon Swift’s similarly named 1729 essay, in which he sugges

PORTLAND — Twenty-one Oregon districts ranging from small to the state's largest failed to meet federal testing targets for Smarter Balanced assessments, according to state data. The launch of new Common Core aligned assessments last school year sparked opt-out movements across the country. States are required to test at least 95 percent of students overall and in every group, such as low-income students and English Language Learners — to fit the No Child Let Behind law and receive
