Golf course a loser In response to Craig Shaw’s letter on the Oak Knoll Golf Course on Nov. 26: The Oak Knoll Golf Course has been losing money since councilor Rich Rosenthal wrote his eye-opening piece “Challenging times for Oak Knoll Golf Course” in 2006. But, after identifying the issues, Rosenthal and the council did little if anything over the past 13 years to make the course a sustainable city asset. Craig Shaw states that golf course losses of $125,000 on average a year

Land-use conflicts are nothing new, and the one shaping up near Ashland is a classic. Operators of Uproot Meats, a free-range pig farm above Siskiyou Boulevard south of Ashland, want to add a chicken-slaughtering and meat-processing facility on their property. Neighbors, including Weisinger’s winery, are objecting to what they fear will be runoff into an irrigation canal, odors and other disturbances. Oliver runs away to London, where he is taken in by a gang of pickpockets taught the trade by an elderly thief, Fagin.

There are many more resources here locally than you’re probably aware of, and you might need to access them at some point. In the last column I introduced a variety of these. Once more, we enter the realm of vital services for aging adults. All these are offered and managed by Senior and Disability Services (SDS) through the Rogue Valley Council of Governments (RVCOG; rvcog.org ). Let’s start with the housing topic. As you can imagine, most people want to age in their current homes f

As I was driving down the street very early the other morning, I saw a man, covered with a blanket, sleeping on a bench outside. I thought, wow, it’s cold out there. The outside thermometer on the dash of my car read: 41 degrees. After all, it’s now December and we’ve just had our first winter storm warning of the season. With my car heater blasting away and the seat warmers switched on, I drove to the Plaza past the gaily decorated downtown shops, their festive window displays

The lighting marks the beginning of the eight-day Jewish holiday period of Hanukkah, sometimes spelled Chanukah. Rabbi Avi Zwiebel, director of the Chabad Jewish Center of Southern Oregon in Ashland, said his daughter was volunteering for a youth program when a gunman opened fire at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh o

I celebrated a birthday feeling fulfilled with experiencing universal love expressed in nature. I was surrounded by hundreds of gold butterflies, waterfalls, beautiful trees and birds. On the way back, I felt pulled to go to Macy’s. I came across these beautiful, unique pair of blue jeans. They were originally $100 with 40 percent off. I said to the Universe, “How pretty these jeans are. I would enjoy paying $32 for them. Otherwise I am fine without getting them.” I asked the c

Lucia Santos and two of her cousins were young Portuguese shepherds who claimed to have been visited by the Virgin Mary six times between May and October 1917. That apparition is now known as Our Lady of Fatima. Lucia also claimed that on July 13 Mary entrusted them with three secrets. Two of the secrets were revealed in 1941 in a document Lucia wrote, but she sealed the third in an envelope and said it wasn’t to be opened until 1960. The envelope eventually reached the Vatican. Buy local Following on a letter to the editor about Amazon I submitted last December, here is Amy Goodman’s commentary included in the Tidings’ “Another View” on Nov. 17. It is very much worth reading for anyone who may have missed it. Jeff Bezos, already the wealthiest person in the world (in excess of $150 billion), continues to want more, more and more while he is reported to make hundreds of thousands of dollars a minute while squeezing compensation for many Amazon wo
