Ashland’s 35th annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will celebrate the day as it offers a “microcosm of what everyone wants to see in the world, which is everyone getting along, seeing, hearing and experiencing all the world’s religions in one place and honoring them in the cause of world peace.” So says the Rev. Ruth Kirby, organizer of the popular ceremony, which, this time will honor “the Spirituality of Food” as the theme. It’s at 10 a.m. Thanksgiv

Peace Flame mocked As a baby boomer, I am certainly no centenarian, so my memories do not include either world war. However what I learned about Veterans Day has remained a strong memory and a lesson learned from my parents. The Great War, as it was called then, ended with no meaningful victory. Instead, after a pointless, horrifying slaughter of the armies of both sides, the conflict abated in the Armistice. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, weapons were laid down and the dest

Childcare will return to the Southern Oregon University campus starting Monday, Jan. 7. Lil’ Rascals Preschool and Childcare Center is set to open a second location at the former Schneider Children’s Center (SCC) site, 1361 Quincy St., Ashland. The SCC closed Aug. 31, after SOU student government voted to stop subsidizing the center, according to Joe Mosley, SOU director of community and media relations. “It was a combination of factors,” Mosley said. “It was never run by the university … But it

Now retired from his career in dentistry, Richard Calhoun just can’t stop drilling — but these days he’s doing it on knotty burls of madrone and manzanita, lathing them into roundish shapes, then power-carving out the insides until they’re thin, light and eye-catchingly aesthetic. “I’ve always been interested in wood, since I was 10 and made my mother a jewel box,” says Calhoun, who was born and raised in Ashland and now lives in Jacksonville. Celebration a success On behalf of the board of directors of Rogue River Watershed Council, I would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s “Celebrate the Rogue!” fundraiser Oct. 20. The event was more fun, entertaining and successful because of the foot-stomping bluegrass of Eight Dollar Mountain, a repeat performance by Seattle’s opera-singing fisheries biologist Gino Lucchetti, and the generous support of our event sponsors — Cascade Stream Solutions, Full Circle Real Estate, H

A virus may affect deer population around the Ashland area. Although only a handful of sick deer have been reported this year, the adenovirus hemorrhagic disease (AHD) can spread quickly through large populations of deer. As documented by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, AHD was first identified in California in 1994 and has since spread throughout central and southwest Oregon. Large outbreaks have occurred every couple of years, but the cause is still unknown. “We’re still

The queue of more than 335 people in need of a Thanksgiving dinner Tuesday wound half-way around the Ashland Emergency Food Bank building as a core team of volunteers boxed up and handed out turkeys and all the fixings — stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes, green beans and pumpkin and berry pies. Based on the food bank’s “times-3 multiplier,” 1,085 people will experience a hearty Thanksgiving feast, officials say. It was donated or bought with contributions from many sources, including Albertson

A significant measles outbreak in 1917 at Lincoln Elementary School in Medford serves as a reminder that, before vaccinations were available, outbreaks were common in the Rogue Valley. The Jackson County Health Department took severe measures to keep the disease from spreading, including closing the school for two weeks. In addition, parents were asked to keep their children at home. The quarantine was not mandatory but was recommended, and most people complied. The Lincoln School students were

About 25 community members concerned with Ashland’s housing crisis spoke their minds at a Housing and Human Services Commission forum Thursday night. Attendees ranged from rent-burdened tenants to landlords looking for ways to reduce costs. Half of the meeting was dedicated to an open conversation about rent burden. Senior Planner Brandon Goldman said 35 percent of renter households in Ashland experience severe rent burden. That means they spend more than half of their income on rent. Several me

Thanks in part to an Ashlander’s help, the rebuild and restoration of the 1872 Butte Creek Mill is on time and under budget according to Maryanne Pitcher, executive director of the Butte Creek Mill Foundation. Massive 30- and 40-foot fir timbers tower over the footprint of the mill, an exquisite example of timber framing. “It’s a really important project because it’s preserving the history of timber framing in our area,” explained Ian Dilworth with Treeborn Timbercraft of Ashland. “There are not

Rick Robinson is one of those folks who love all things Christmas. For him, it’s truly the most wonderful time of the year. He’s unapologetic about his sentimentality. Although Thanksgiving is still days away, Christmas carols are already playing throughout the Robinson home, and he’s looking forward to firing up “White Christmas” on television for his wife and daughter. Robinson, however, has no problem poking fun at holiday traditions or taking liberties with beloved Christmas tales and carols

Paying homage to a local landmark has once again paid off for gingerbread baker Kate Sharbono. Sharbono’s entirely edible rendition of Ashland’s Allen Elizabethan Theatre took center stage at this year’s GingerBread Jubilee. It’s the third consecutive year that Sharbono, of Eagle Point, has claimed the Jubilee’s Best in Show title and $1,000 grand prize. In 2016, Sharbono wowed judges by reconstructing — in gingerbread — her hometown’s beloved Butte Creek Mill, which burned on Christmas 2015. “I

From the first day of Donald Trump’s inauguration, and listening to his dark acceptance speech, I’ve been convinced that this presidency will not have a right ending. It was affirmed the next day when Trump spoke at Langley. While standing in front of the CIA’s wall of stars that represents agents lost in the line of duty, he paused in mid-sentence, recalling how many times he’d been on the cover of TIME magazine. That moment begged for a solemn statement of gratitude, acknowledging the sacrific

Nearly drowned out by honking cars, a chanting mob of about 250 Plaza protesters Thursday shouted “Save our democracy” and “No one is above the law,” following the seeming endangerment of the Robert Mueller investigation of Russia meddling in the 2016 election triggered by the firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Protests on the curb of East Main Street in Ashland have been frequent in recent years, but this demonstration, two days after midterm elections, was especially vociferous. Many si
