Two hotly-contested discussed topics headline the Ashland City Council agenda for its regular meeting Tuesday. The council plans to continue discussion surrounding the cleanup of about 20 acres of Union Pacific Railroad property in Ashland. Based on a record of decision from 2001, UPRR is in voluntary cleanup status with the Department of Environmental Quality regarding the site, which is contaminated with petroleum waste and heavy metals. Representatives from the DEQ will be on hand to address

On June 1, 2017, at 12:01 in the morning, Donald Trump tweeted the following: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe.” The word covfefe had his followers on Twitter and the press reaching for their dictionaries, only to discover that the word — except in Trump’s early morning universe — doesn’t exist. However, since this is the Internet, covfefe quickly became a meme, the word attached to photos and accompanied by text. #Covfefe. But before continuing, let’s take a moment to define meme, a

As someone with an extensive professional background in the arts, and especially in the visual arts (having started working in the gallery business in Santa Fe some 20 years ago, and still to this day in art and design) it falls to me to follow the directive of my editor and give a critique on "Threshold,” the public art installation that has recently been installed conspicuously at the center of the island located between the Ashland Public Library and Fire Station No. 1. Designed and exe

Some two dozen protesters on Monday chanted, did street theater and gave speeches in front of Ashland’s Chase Bank, charging that JPMorgan Chase is a major financial backer of Calgary-based Pembina Pipeline, which is making a third try at getting permission from FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) to run a natural gas pipeline across southwest Oregon. The lively, bullhorn-wielding group drew honks and thumbs-up from passing motorists on Main Street as they used orange cone markers to tra

It’s not always easy finding a break as a writer, especially when just starting out. Sometimes the rejection letter pile becomes overwhelming, but a local man has created a new opportunity to find a way into print. Writer and U.S. Army vet Dave Meisburger is looking for 10 more Oregon writers to be published in his book “2018 Poetry and Short Story Anthology – Oregon Writers Edition.” Not only is this opportunity free, but Meisburger is covering the complete cost of p

There is a saying: “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” That describes the situation we all face now that State Sen. Alan DeBoer has announced that he will not defend his record by running for re-election in November. When DeBoer ran in 2016, he promised he would not automatically follow the increasingly right-wing partisan stands of his party. “Trust me,” he said. Since he had no record as a state legislator, he was able to lead voters to believe

SEATTLE (AP) — Sabrina Ionescu scored a career-high 36 points and No. 6 Oregon won its first Pac-12 Conference tournament title beating No. 16 Stanford 77-57 on Sunday night. Playing in its first conference tournament final, the Ducks looked every bit the part of a premier team heading into the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Ionescu was the star, as the Ducks (30-4) avenged one of their two regular season losses in conference play. Ionescu, who was the Pac-12 player of the year, was brilliant

Albertsons is bidding to take over 36 stores previously operated by Haggen Foods, including the former Safeway store in Ashland. Earlier this year, Haggen purchased 146 Safeway and Albertsons grocery stores in five states, including many in Oregon and Washington, following a Safeway-Albertsons merger and a federal order that they sell off 168 stores to avoid creating monopoly situations. But Haggen, which had previously operated only 18 stores in two states, struggled to operate its new stores,

Slowly walking through nature for prolonged periods of time has been proven to drastically increase quality of life. It’s called forest bathing. The practice originated in Japan in the 1980s as a solution to revert the intense stress developed from working and living in an unnatural environment. A few of the restorative benefits include: boosted immune system functioning with an increase in cancer-fighting cells, reduced blood pressure and stress, improved mood, increased ability to focus, accel

Inner Peace is achieved by following your heart’s longing. I know because my husband and I have made some drastic life changes due to following our inner guidance. Admittedly, I have wondered if our wandering ways are just “wanderlust” or are we truly following our hearts. How could we have left behind the beautiful home we built in the hills of New Mexico 20 years ago? It was intended to be our forever home we would never leave. Yet, when the inspiration struck, we sold our home and 10 acres of

Awesome to have Hunter and Ryder here to check it out! #familyroadtrip,” with a photo of bicycles attached to the rear of an RV. If anyone can incite change through song, it’s Ziggy Marley. His immersion in music came at age 10 when he sat in on recording sessions with his father, Bob Marley. Taking the lead in the Melody Makers after his father’s death, Ziggy and his sisters Sharon and Cedella and brother Stephen recorded eight records and won three Grammys before 2003, when the Jamaican singer and songwriter kicked off his solo career. Today, the eight-time Grammy winner, philanthropist and reggae icon has 13 solo album

The Ashland City Council dove into a full-throated debate about handling of policies affecting Ashland’s senior population at a study session Monday, but passed for now on the idea of creating a city ad hoc senior committee to advise itself, as that might duplicate the efforts of the city Parks & Recreation Commission, which is about to hire its first senior program superintendent. Interim City Administrator Adam Hanks said the newly formed APRC Senior Program Advisory Committee (SPAC) is also j

After the 2008 financial meltdown, I was slow to transfer my cash from the Wall Street bank I had used for 20 years to the Rogue Credit Union. I was daunted by the effort required to redirect all my automatic deposits and withdrawals. Yet, in 2011 I finally made the switch. I’m glad I did. When I restarted this column, I recommended that we pursue two strategies to address the deep crisis of our nation that Trump’s election reflected — engage politically at the global level and withdraw economic

Much to the delight of railroad buffs, a giant Union Pacific train ran through the Rogue Valley Friday and Saturday, June 1-2, perhaps for the first time. It was a “historic event,” notes local train fan Brandon Templeton, who photographed the train’s movements through the Rogue Valley over a couple days. The train was detoured due to a tunnel collapse near Oakridge. Tunnel No. 11, midway between Odell Lake and Oakridge, collapsed around 2 p.m., May 29. No injuries were reported, but thousands o

A poignant and moving set of four original paintings of homeless people by Aaron Hansen Burgess of Walla Walla, Washington, is making the rounds of Ashland churches and synagogues. It’s now on display at First Presbyterian Church after previously hanging at the South Mountain Friends Meeting house in Ashland. With uncanny realism, they show the homeless in various states of distress, hunger, hopelessness, roundly being ignored by passers-by and, says the Rev. Dan Fowler of the Presbyterian Churc

Why bet the farm? Engineers design to “fail safe” when miscalculation may result in a devastating catastrophe. If one design choice will save money, while another avoids the risk of serious loss, they are taught to choose the design which avoids calamity in the event of failure. We should follow that standard when it comes to climate change. Despite scientific consensus about our effect on climate, we are recklessly ignoring the engineers’ “precautionary principle” by betting that nothing will h
