The water is warming Legend suggests that frogs will swim with blissful ignorance in a warming pot until cooked. Humans shouldn't exhibit the same behavior even if half our population (those born after 1985) have only known a warming world. But when we ignore the warnings of climate scientists around the world that is just what we are doing. However, if we used our brains: We would stop feeding the global warming fire with continued fossil fuel consumption. We would demand that our elected repre

Standing for something So now we know who will be the Republican nominee. I am appalled, as are many other Americans, at the level to which this beautiful, inspirational country has fallen. I would like to remind my fellow Americans of the words of Abby Mann, author of "Judgment at Nuremberg," both from his script and from his screenplay. If this nation had acted upon these words when Obama came into power, I believe we would have eliminated any possibility of the current Republican nominee. &#x

Cow Creeks give aid Community non-profits Ashland Emergency Food Bank and the Ashland Family YMCA share many of the same goals and serve many of the same families. Our activities vary, but we are both devoted to services that sustain the physical and emotional health of community members — children, adults and families. This summer, we have another thing in common: our tremendous gratitude for the support we have received from the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation. In June, Cow Creek awa

Sounds simple I don't understand why the parents of the children with immunizations are worried. Their children won't get the disease because they've been immunized. The parents whose children didn't receive immunizations made a choice. Sounds simple to me. William Knight, Ashland Let him walk away Stop the investigation into former Gov. Kitzhaber's dealings immediately. There is no need to spend one more precious Oregonian dollar on this issue. He has resigned. It's over. He will never face pro

Food event was success Last Saturday the Ashland Food Project held their first mass canvassing event in Ashland. It was called "60 Minutes against Hunger," and it yielded 105 new food donors in support of the Ashland Emergency Food Bank. Volunteer canvassers gathered in the church parking lot at Siskiyou and Walker and were paired off in teams of two. They knocked on doors for one hour spreading the word about the Food Project and signing up new food donors. It was a very successful day despite

A new downtown City Hall The Ad Hoc Committee which studied options for the location of City Hall realized that no matter what, the current City Hall building is not adequate. In other words it should be either reinforced or dismantled and rebuilt no matter what its future use might be. Since it has been added on to and the facade reworked, the historic value of the building is compromised. Thus, the best decision is to dismantle it and start over and build a larger City Hall building in its pla

A conversation This is the gist of the conversation I had with a friend while walking near the Ashland Plaza. It was his first visit to Ashland. Friend: "Hobos." Me: "No, they are not hobos, they are mostly misunderstood, runaway young people." Friend: "Bums." Me: "No, they are not bums. They are people going through a difficult time in their life." Friend: "Why doesn't Ashland have a no-loitering law?" Me: "I called the Police Department to ask about that, and a nice lady named Tammy told me th

OSF has lost its way When I read Herb Rothschild’s opinion about the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (Aug. 3), I silently shouted out, "Yes!" I expressed similar thoughts in a letter to the OSF Board of Directors, with a copy to Bill Rauch, to the box office when I returned my two remaining Shakespeare tickets, and to the Membership Department when I returned my membership renewal unrenewed. The 2016 OSF season of Shakespeare plays went from good to deplorable. It was with some hesitation tha

Trumpist candidates Conservatives are abandoning ship. In the March Atlantic, two senior fellows at the Brookings Institute, Jonathan Rauch and Benjamin Wittes, known for their conservative views, urge conservatives to vote a straight Democratic Party ticket to save the nation and the Republican party from Trumpism. They offered a simple logical syllogism: (1) The GOP has become the party of Trumpism. (2) Trumpism is a threat to democratic values and the rule of law. (3) The Republican Party is

Comments on timber industry As a participant in the recent Summit meeting, May 20 in Medford, tolook at the realities of the BLM’s plan revisions, I was struck withthe economic considerations for our areaif their proposed massivelogging plans go into action. The economy of Josephine County haschanged considerably while some of our leader, including the countcommission, still hope for the massive profits from logging receivedin the 1960’s. Ire for Green’s birds and bees Shame on you Daily Tidings, for allowing such weak minded thinking to be published on your website. I am referring to Mike Green’s silly article on “.” That Mr. Green is from the right is not an issue, nor is the fact that he has an ax to grind. But to hide his real complaint behind an attack on proms is frankly, childish. It is most true that many teens are poorly educated on the topic of sex, but as an adult, who pretends wisdom on such ma

"Coraline" brought in $16.3 million in its opening weekend. With an average take of $7,105 per theater, the film far outpaced other films opening the same weekend. Many found the success of an animated film set in Ashland unexpected. The film's director, Henry Selick, was never one of the skeptics, as he explained in a recent phone interview with the Tidings from his Portland home. "I wasn't surprised," Selick said. "I was kind of counting on the film doing pretty well." Selick was confident bec

Grinch for shoppers It was Shop Local Saturday and I, like many others, was out to support our community. Parking was a bit tricky, so I found a space — not really legal, but one that seemed the least likely to impact pedestrians, motorists or other parked cars: the Key Bank (closed) parking lot. I did not park within the lines, thus the ticket. Maybe it was a fire lane issue, but at least half of the cars in the lot had tickets. Having once lived in a town that topped its parking meters

The Democrat we need After hearing Jamie McLeod-Skinner speak on two occasions, I am convinced that this is the Democrat we need to represent Congressional District 2 in Congress. Not only does she have a thoughtful and intelligent grasp of the issues facing Oregonians, but also her proposed solutions are smart and are a good fit for this very diverse district. Her leadership skills and experience are impressive (see her website: jamiefororegon.com). Greg Walden’s time has passed, and Jam

Simplistic reporting I would like to take the Tidings to task for easy, simplistic and biased reporting in the prolonged story of Shakespeare Books and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The paper has reported the story as one of “David and Goliath” from the beginning. This framing of the story set up a “good guy vs. bad guy” or “good sincere small business (the book store) vs. large heartless business (OSF)” scenario from the beginning. Not only is this f

Dave Willis continues to try to win support for the year-old expansion of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, one pair of hiking boots at a time. Willis and his Soda Mountain Wilderness Council have crafted this year’s version of their annual free public hike series to highlight some of the hidden attributes of the 113,008-acre monument’s newest additions, some of which are targets for removal from monument designation by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. “We want to help the public see what th

Female spiritual leaders of the region Sunday drew from their own experience to spell out how sexual harassment and predation work in religious settings — and what can be done about it, starting with standing up and speaking out. Up to 85 percent of clergywomen across all Protestant denominations have been sexually harassed on the job — “and I was one of them,” said Rev. Dr. Karen McClintock of Ashland, a “congregational consultant” with Graduate Theological Union, who helped healing through the
