It is, unfortunately, appropriate that the National Football League’s owners decided to issue their new rule attacking free expression the week before Memorial Day. A holiday dedicated to those who gave their lives for our nation’s freedom has itself been mired in political controversy almost from the beginning. The latest round of posturing and pandering around patriotism should not surprise us. Samuel Johnson saw patriotism as “the last refuge of a scoundrel.” Let’s qualify that. An honest lov

It’s 1939, and legendary film producer David O. Selznick is five weeks into shooting “Gone With the Wind” when he realizes the script is terrible and cannot be saved. With five days to replace it and restart the shoot, Selznick pulls Victor Fleming off the set of “The Wizard of Oz” to direct the new version, enlisting playwright, screenwriter and script doctor Ben Hecht to rewrite the script. There’s only one small problem: Hecht has never read the book. Selznick and Fleming act out the story fo

PORTLAND & A sheriff entangled in the political scandal of former Gov. Neil Goldschmidt officially told state investigators on Thursday there is no credible evidence that he lied to the public about Goldschmidt sexually abusing a teenage girl. Multnomah County Sheriff Bernie Giusto also repeated his claims that the media has rushed to judgment about his involvement in the scandal that became public in May 2004 with the revelation that Goldschmidt had abused the girl while he was mayor of Portlan

To the resounding honks of passing vehicles, some two dozen Ashlanders waved signs and chanted that, when a bill allowing the Keystone XL pipeline project to go ahead passes the Republican Congress, President Barack Obama should veto it.  “This is the critical issue of our times to deal with, if it’s not too late,” said former city Parks & Recreation Commission member JoAnne Eggers. “We should keep fossil fuels in the ground, to reduce greenhouse gases. Two facts motivate Kai Safran and his new Rogue Liberation Library (RLL0 — that prison life is awful and that books allow incarcerated people the chance to escape to another world and perhaps help build a new life when they gain freedom again. Safran, a local farmer, has set up his library at Ashland’s Peace House, and has organized fundraising and volunteers to help collect and ship donated books to prisoners on an individual basis. “Books take their minds off their circumstances. WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Paul Ryan captured enough House votes Thursday to become the chamber's next speaker, as a splintered Republican Party turned to the youthful but seasoned lawmaker to mend its self-inflicted wounds and craft a conservative message to woo voters in next year's elections. In a slow-moving roll call that mixed politics with pageantry, 218 lawmakers — a majority — called out the Wisconsin Republican's name as their pick for the job. That assured that Ryan w

The Ashland city council soon will explore the possibility of making the City Recorder an appointive, not elective position, breaking up many duties among other departments and reducing the pay. The elective recorder is in the city charter, so the change would have to be approved by voters. At a council study session Monday, May 4, city Administrator Dave Kanner said the primary election of May 2016 would be a good time to put the measure to voters, rather than calling a special e

How much should you pay if you park beyond the allotted time? In the city of Ashland it has been $11, a rate believed to have been established by a municipal court judge about 30 years ago.  The Ashland City Council on Tuesday is expected to pave the way to hike the fine to $26 by approving the second reading of an ordinance clarifying that the council has the authority to set the rate. The council is expected to officially consider the increase at a subsequent meeting, possibly as early as

As an ethics controversy has prompted calls for Oregon's governor to resign, the woman who would replace him abruptly left a conference in Washington, D.C., to return home Wednesday. It wasn't clear whether the unscheduled return of Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown had anything to do with the influence-peddling allegations surrounding Gov. John Kitzhaber and his fiancee, Cylvia Hayes. Brown's spokesman, Tony Green, said he didn't know why Brown left the National Association of Secretaries of
