“Lives Well Lived” is a nicely assembled montage of interviews of oldsters, aged 75 and beyond, as well as a valentine to director Sky Bergman’s 103-year-old grandmother, resident of the Italian Bronx, who is still able to embrace life, such as it is, with an engaging vigor. In truth, “Lives” holds out a promise that with each interview these men and women, whose back stories are very different, will reveal a nugget or two about how to live a rich and fulfilling life. The subtitle of the film is

TALENT — Eric Hansen long has had an eye on future energy production. Now he’s enticing the next generation to pursue work in the industry. The co-founder of True South Solar was all smiles Thursday as a cadre of Talent Middle School students took part in a hands-on demonstration of renewable energy centered on solar power. “By bringing our equipment here to the middle school children, we’re hoping to get their hands dirty a little bit,” Hansen said. An Ashland couple who filmed a family of bears in their garage over the weekend did some things right, and were fortunate that Mama Bear kept her distance. The ursine visitors to the home of Chris and Susan Hearn early Saturday weren’t the only animals to stray out of the forest and into town in recent days. A cougar was spotted about 1:30 a.m. Monday on Iowa and Idaho streets not far above the boulevard. That sighting followed an earlier cougar encounter on Hargadine Street in March. None of th

Voter turnout in Tuesday’s primary was the lowest in decades. That’s partly because the state’s Motor Voter law has added thousands of voters to the rolls and partly because the top two major parties don’t allow more voters to participate, even as the parties’ share of the electorate continues to shrink. The statewide turnout stood at just under 33 percent at midday Wednesday. The Secretary of State’s Office tried to put a positive spin on that number by noting it was better than the turnouts in

Oppose the pipeline I moved down to the Rogue Valley from Portland three years ago, and it is the place I consider home. Over the past few months, I have been dedicating time to help fight against the pipeline proposed to come through Southern Oregon. Countless hours have been spent calling residents, educating those who may not know about the pipeline and collecting signatures on petitions to fight against Jordan Cove. After spending time researching various businesses throughout the valley, su

Grab your lawn chair or blanket and escape to the shady lawns at the Butler Bandshell in Lithia Park for a night of music performed by the Ashland City Band at 7 p.m. Thursday. The bandshell grounds are surrounded by towering cedars and redwoods, providing the perfect venue for an old-fashioned concert of marches, overtures, Broadway tunes and other concert-band favorites. Under the direction of Don Bieghler of Medford, the band will perform 10 free Thursday night concerts from June 14 to Aug. 1

Slowly walking through nature for prolonged periods of time has been proven to drastically increase quality of life. It’s called forest bathing. The practice originated in Japan in the 1980s as a solution to revert the intense stress developed from working and living in an unnatural environment. A few of the restorative benefits include: boosted immune system functioning with an increase in cancer-fighting cells, reduced blood pressure and stress, improved mood, increased ability to focus, accel

Long before Tyrannosaurus rex, the world was filled with pterosaurs — bizarre-looking flying reptiles, some as huge as a fighter jet, who ate everything, terrorizing the Mesozoic Age for 160 million years until they, like the dinosaurs, were killed off by a big asteroid. That little-known world, our window into which has been vastly expanded by science in the last few decades, has been recreated in a stunning new ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum exhibit that invites you, at one point, to virt

More than 85 people fanned out across the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument on May 26 on a mission to count birds. In small groups, birding experts and citizen-scientists began at daybreak surveying 11 different sites within the monument. A total of 112 bird species were identified during this year’s BioBlitz, including both resident and migrating species. “Its remarkable that during one eight-hour period nearly half the number of species that have been reported during the entire month of May i

We find amazing natural beauty on public lands, but too often we also find them vandalized by trash dumps, noxious weeds, and off-road vehicle damage. Public lands, now more than ever, need a little extra care. They need you! Public land managers need community help to accomplish stewardship projects. Fortunately, public land stewards are stepping up in the Rogue Valley and hundreds of community members have muddied their boots and got their hands dirty taking an active role in public lands stew

Thanks for your service It is the season of thanking our veterans for their service in the military. There are parades, writings, and throughout the media a common refrain: “Thank you for your service.” We call this patriotic. However, as one veteran quipped, “People would not say that if they knew what a monster I have become!” This speaks to the fact of what war does to the human psyche. We take 19-year olds, train them to kill, give them automatic weapons and kill they do. If they survive, th

A sensible approach? I have an idea as part of the solution to the homeless problem as profiled in the Monday paper. Why don't the police, when confronting homeless people, have a special card that is printed out that explains what transients are not permitted to do within the city? For example, it has long been a policy that street people are not allowed to ask directly for money; why not have that put on a pamphlet that the police can hand to the people they engage. This is a partial solution

It’s becoming a little tricky to be seen as an objective reviewer when it comes to productions at the Oregon Cabaret Theatre. For some time now, the company has been producing record hit after record hit, with a fairly reliable sell-out crowd and an ongoing standard of excellence that makes one selfishly wish that they might at least give us one mediocre show so that a reviewer can redeem some balance, pan the thing, and reboot their neutrality, so to speak. However, OCT continues to shin

ASHLAND – City managers were already making moves to create a more pollinator-friendly environment before Ashland gained its official Bee City USA designation on Jan. 13. Parks and Recreation in December reworked the planting list for the new, seven-acre Ashland Creek Park, currently under construction. “Michael Black, the parks and recreation director, jumped on board right away with changes in plants for Ashland Creek Park,” said Kristina LeFever, who presented the pollina
