What happened? What is going on? Remember when we had respect for our leaders? Even when we did not agree politically, we still felt as though they deserved our respect; I was raised that way. Even Rudy Giuliani earned respect from all, with his handling of the 9/11 disaster, so what happened? I hated the circus when I was young (yes, the clowns); now, the circus is in my living room on my TV. Evil clowns, running this country, making me feel like a scared child again. I will be 60 years old on

The nut case capital I frequent a Facebook group — Ashland Peeps — and the amount of crazy talk coming out of Ashland is astounding. “We don’t need 5G — my cell phone is plenty fast enough.” “My cable internet is fine.” Do these same people not understand how bandwidth gets to their phone to begin with? How do they think bandwidth gets from Point A to Point B? Often that delivery method is wireless — and — when 5G comes on board and it will come on board, 5G will be the delivery method! Do these

Don’t support pipeline Recently, Oregon Business & Industry and the Oregon Business Alliance sent letters of support to federal regulators for the Jordan Cove Pipeline, with which many local business leaders were represented. It disappoints me greatly that prominent people in our community such as Jessica Gomez of Rogue Valley Microdevices, Sid DeBoer of Lithia Motors, Bill Thorndike of Medford Fabrication, Dave Underriner of Providence Health & Services and others would turn their backs on our

Thanks for fire report Just a quick note of thanks to all at the Ashland Post Office, but especially to our rural letter carrier. On Monday our Fire Department was alerted to a significant wildland fire near 15000 Highway 66. Thanks to the actions of the postal employee, fire crews from three agencies were able to contain the fire at just under 2 acres. No structures were involved. The outcome would have been much worse without that call from our carrier! Thank you. Gene Davies, fire chief Green

There’s been a lot of interesting music coming from the Southern Oregon University football stadium the last couple of weeks, sounds that can be heard in most parts of town. Turns out it’s the sound of one of the most elite drum and bugle corps in the world. The Santa Clara Vanguard (SCV) Drum & Bugle Corps has decided to call Ashland home while they practice for their summer tour. Haven’t heard enough of them? They’ll be rehearsing until June 8, but will be back for performances July 4-7, accor

Ignore negative ads What is with the negative TV ads about Sen. Jeff Merkley? The ads are just about making the Ssenator look bad. And why would anyone vote for the opposition who has nothing good to say about themselves? If the only way to promote yourself or your party is to make someone else look bad, it shows a very weak position. The people of Oregon are not stupid. We do not want to know what you are against, we want to know what you stand for and what you are going to do about jobs, bette

All about the money Wonder why the Oregon Sheriffs Association just donated $100,000 to the No on 91 Campaign (the ballot measure to tax and regulate marijuana)? It’s all about profit. Fighting major crime does not pay as well. Law enforcement gets federal grant money to make drug arrests. Sheriff’s departments are incentivized to keep arrests high to maximize grant money — money that can’t be used for any other purpose. Don’t trust law enforcement on this one. It&r

Some fundraisers support activism, but not necessarily in a way woven too tightly to its purpose — make a pledge, buy some cookies and call it good. The annual fundraiser at Willow Wind Community Learning Center, however, sets out to be educational and thought-provoking for its student participants. This morning, June 4, the center will close off its parking lot and create safety-cone-lined lanes for little bikes and scooters for its third “Bike-A-Thon.” This year the theme is “Hear Our Voices.”

Don't persecute homeless Saturday's Tidings announced the city’s plan to remove the fountain and plantings from downtown’s Chautauqua Square. The article notes that the objective is to “make the area less attractive as a transient hangout.” This seems to be a continuation of the current approach to Ashland’s Plaza: The city is removing shade, grass, and water from downtown in order to drive out the homeless. I would like to point out two shortcomings of this ap

Get the history right Marcus Smith's article about OLLI was interesting, but the idea for SOLIR came from Sonny and Doris Klein from UCLA. They brought the idea to "SOU officials" who passed the "buck" to Meredith Reynolds, who contacted Art Kreisman, who got the ball rolling. Years ago, I read that "history" by the third generation is 60 percent hearsay. Let's get this part of the article right. Respect all road users Kudos to Medford, Talent and Ashland for sweeping gravel from city roads following the snow in early January. Regrettably, ODOT and other local governments have not swept roads or have been slow to do so. Most motorists won’t notice the difference between swept and unswept roads. That is because the gravel is thrown out of the travel lane by passing traffic and into bike lanes or shoulders. It is a very different story for bike riders getting to work, school, or out

Questions still unanswered  Last fall, Councilor Dennis Slattery emailed me the following: “… I have said from the very beginning I have no interest in your (Petitioners for Restoration of Our Plaza) issues with how this was done, the process and your characterization of the work …” Time after time, the petitioners got the same message from everyone on the council majority, meaning Greg Lemhouse, Pam Marsh, Rich Rosenthal and Mike Morris. No one wanted to discuss

By John Anastasio Climate change is real. Climate change is happening now and it’s time to stop coddling the professional liars and financiers who knowingly spread disinformation in the climate change denial campaign, and prosecute them for treason and involuntary manslaughter. There is a term for their crime: ecocide. Already, people are dying of excessive heat and other forms of climate extremes and billions more are suffering. June 2015 was the hottest on record in Medford,

Multiple people described confrontations in which they were physically threatened. Others related that they have heard

Old Ashland friends are recalling the life, magic and humor of their Ashland days in the 1970s with future television personality Harry Anderson, who went on to fame as the wacky, loveable judge on “Night Court.” Anderson died Monday at his home in Asheville, North Carolina, at age 65. In 1971, a youthful Anderson and Rabbi David Zaslow of Havurah Shir Hadash put on a “Unicorn Magic and Other Follies” show at the Varsity Theatre and at then-Southern Oregon College (SO

Multi-instrumentalist and writer Dave Bernard is a huge Eagles fan. Before Roy Rains left Camelot Theatre as its artistic director, he and Bernard discussed several ideas for music spotlights at the community theater. “‘Eagles’ is the one that rose to the surface,” Bernhard says. Writing the script, he wanted to capture the history of the Eagles when the band was at its most successful. “We tell a bit about the earlier years,” he says. “There’s a lot of story there with the band members, what ha

Citizens often feel frustrated at the City Council's lack of response to the ideas and concerns they express during public forum. The councilors aren't really disinterested, but because public meeting laws require all decision-making by the council to take place in public during two study sessions and two business meeting per month, they are focused on an already full schedule of demanding decisions that by law only they can decide. On the other hand, they are usually very accommodating about me
