The contest to replace the late state Sen. Alan Bates is set — and that leaves a Democrat running unopposed in House District 5, unless Jackson County Republicans can recruit a candidate by next Monday, when they have scheduled a meeting to pick a nominee. We hope they succeed, for the sake of a healthy political debate. Alan DeBoer, local businessman and former mayor of Ashland, will face Tonia Moro, a Medford attorney, on Nov. 8 for the Senate District 3 seat left vacant by Bates' sudde

“Lives Well Lived” is a nicely assembled montage of interviews of oldsters, aged 75 and beyond, as well as a valentine to director Sky Bergman’s 103-year-old grandmother, resident of the Italian Bronx, who is still able to embrace life, such as it is, with an engaging vigor. In truth, “Lives” holds out a promise that with each interview these men and women, whose back stories are very different, will reveal a nugget or two about how to live a rich and fulfilling life. The subtitle of the film is

Burns are outrageous I can hardly express how outraged I am at the city’s “controlled burns” on Sunday. The smoke in my neighborhood was so bad I coughed and wheezed most of the night. I’m elderly and on a fixed income and can’t afford to buy a filter unit for the house. What do you expect me to do. Move? I’m so tired of you playing with our lives. When we bend over backwards to try and clean the air, you are polluting it! And I pay for it. Your organization keeps getting bigger and bigger. J. A

Riddle, a small town in Douglas County, was once an important railway stop on the Siskiyou line of the Southern Pacific. Today Riddle is known for its old nickel mines, lumber mills and an Old West spirit. In 1913, with a long hunting season and high limits on bagging, people willingly donated a buck for a fall barbecue. It was hard work quartering, seasoning and cooking the deer on iron rods over hot coals. In 1916, someone suggested a barbecue cook from Eugene famous for roasting meat in a cov
