Don't be manipulated Opinionists are fond of holding and stating their view on subjects like climate change whether based on science or not. Some are gullible enough to be manipulated by the fossil-fuel industry into holding opinions based on self-serving lies promoted by those corporations. Climate deniers are cherry-pickers of data that promote what they want to believe and reject evidence accepted by 97 percent or more of climate scientists that deny those opinions. The wise skeptic will acce

Vote for Ankerberg In the race for county commissioner, position 1, there's only one qualified candidate, and that's Curt Ankerberg, CPA. I'm a senior citizen, and Curt has been my neighbor for many years. He's always been honest, kind, helpful, and generous to me and to other neighbors. Curt has also donated a large amount of his time to public service, because he truly cares about his community. You'll never hear of his positive virtues from the liberal Mail Tribune, which tends to smear conse

Moderate Republicans needed Regarding political parties and views of global warming, you’d think there is a   sharp and equal partisan divide, Democrats trying, Republicans denying. Not so. According to the recent large Yale survey of our entire voting population, almost  half of liberal to moderate Republicans are concerned for what humans are doing to our planet. They are more aligned with moderate to conservative Democrats, and both are closer to liberal Democrats, than

Vote for Crain I urge you to join me in voting for Judge Crain as she seeks re-election to the Circuit Court. Her reputation as a fair, efficient judge is well deserved. She is a person of consummate professionalism, integrity and dedication to her position and her community. Her enthusiasm about taking on the extra work of presiding over treatment courts amplifies her commitment. One only has to read the letters to the editor appearing in the Mail Tribune and Daily Tidings to recognize the grat

Boycott over dialogue Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. provided us with a model for nonviolent conflict resolution. He advocated for heart-to-heart dialogue based on seeing another’s point of view, hearing another’s questions, and understanding another’s assessment of ourselves. It is unfortunate that Dr. King’s philosophy was lost on Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Bill Rauch. Rauch chose boycott over a dialogue that could have enlightened if not resolved OSF’s

More than one participant in a workshop on the housing element of Ashland's comprehensive plan last Wednesday summed up the problem succinctly. "We've said we want a whole community, but we haven't done anything to make it happen," developer Mark DiRienzo said. "It used to be a nice town to live in, now it's a great place to be a tourist," said Ashland resident Phil Miller. Planning Commissioner Haywood Norton said he had talked to a Realtor who had never sold a house to an Ashland High School g

Dreaming of a cleaner parade Imagine a Fourth of July parade without vehicles. Imagine the creativity and fun in the Halloween parade, shown in the fourth entries. Everyone walking, maybe pushing or pulling wagons, carts, small trailers. All musicians walking, they don’t have to be marching bands. No big smelly trucks, no noisy cars and motorcycles. More fun groups like the historic Talent Tomatoes, Gepetto’s wontons, the wonderful Samba dancers. Even the dignitaries could walk. Gove

Fuss about flag in poor taste I can’t believe that people are actually fussing about the new flag. Haven’t they heard of “America, Love it or Leave it?” Everyday when I drive by the new flag, I think about my son who is risking his life everyday serving in Iraq. Keep the flag — lose the president! We have tons wrong with the USA, but at least we still have our freedom. Linda Goins Flag facts would help critics Let me start by informing Thomas Walters that the new fl

Republican Jessica Gomez and Democrat Jeff Golden are the apparent winners in the Senate District 3 primary Tuesday night and will face off in the November general election. “I’m excited, I’m overjoyed,” said Gomez, a political newcomer. According to Jackson County Elections, Gomez had 53.65 percent of the vote with 45.94 percent going to opponent Curt Ankerberg, whose campaign was overtaken by issues about his temperament and tax fraud problems as well as his sharply worded attacks against his

Defense for anti-war sentiment It feels like the 60’s again with all the pro war people telling the rest of us to “Love it or leave it”, and other such tender compassionate conservative sentiments. Well, history has proved those who opposed the war then, were right. The same applies now. Once again the defense of the indefensible is predicated on trivializing of symbols and the subsequent elevation of symbols to an unassailable position. Don’t criticize the flag! How simp

As a former member of the Ashland Arts Commission I know from personal experience that the members are all of the highest integrity and have striven to guarantee that the entire process is as inclusive and considerate of all members of our community as possible. No easy fixes Since I moved to Ashland in 1998, I've had many mixed feelings about the homeless population and the panhandling issues. The city and many organizations have reached out and helped these folks in many ways. However, I was, and still am, totally outraged by the devastating fire at Oak Knoll that destroyed 11 homes. It was started by a longtime local homeless man. He also was known to throw rocks at passing vehicles on I-5. Obviously he's mentally unstable; nevertheless, I don't appr

The flag has got to go The mission statement of PremierWest Bank (PWB)begins by stating, “We are committed to being the best community bank throughout Southern Oregon and Northern California . . ..” Yet, thisself-proclaimed community-minded bank has come into our community, and the first thing it does isintroduce an intrusive eyesore in the form of a ridiculously huge, disproportionate-to-the-surroundings flag which obstructs a once-uninterrupted, beautiful view of the surrounding hi

I am announcing today that I will resign as Governor of the State of Oregon. It is not in my nature to walk away from a job I have undertaken – it is to stand and fight for the cause. For that reason I apologize to all those people who gave of their faith, time, energy and resources to elect me to a fourth term last year and who have supported me over the past three decades. I promise you that I will continue to pursue our shared goals and our common cause in another venue. I must also say

Ashland City Councilors took a straw poll at Monday's Study Session meeting to get a better handle on which applicants they'll interview to fill the council seat left vacant by Pam Marsh's election to the state legislature. Each of the five councilors were allowed to write up to four applicant's names on a piece of paper, along with their own name, so it would not be a secret ballot, which are not allowed in public meetings. Mayor John Stromberg did not vote on the 12 applicants remaining after

Set against a backdrop of powerful hydraulic machines capable of raising many tons of dead weight, Wisconsin Gov. (and GOP presidential candidate) Scott Walker surely hoped for a similar boost to his sagging campaign Monday at XTreme Manufacturing in downtown Las Vegas. Plummeting in the polls, Walker returned to the theme that made him a hero to Wisconsin conservatives and the bane of organized labor. And this time Walker went, ahem, XTreme: He rolled out a plan to gut the National Labor Relati

The $12.7 million project proposed by Orijis Energy would have 37,905 solar panels along Rossanley Drive, also known as Highway 238. The company has energy projects around the world. On Wednesday, commissioners granted the project an exception to a state goal that calls for the preservation of agricultural land for farm use. Co

Councilor Rich Rosenthal seconded the motion. “I’ve noticed a high degree of professionalism. He’s changed the culture in a short perio
