What's documented

Leon Black, founder of Apollo Global Management, paid Jeffrey Epstein roughly $158 million between 2012 and 2017 for what Black described as estate-planning and tax advice (CBS News; Leon Black — Wikipedia). Black had appointed Epstein a trustee of his family foundation in 1997 and sought his advice on a personal legal dispute in 2015. After the payments drew scrutiny, Apollo's board commissioned an independent review by Dechert LLP attorney Andrew J. Levander, which concluded in early 2021 that it found no evidence Black was involved in or aware of Epstein's crimes, and no evidence Epstein had any role at Apollo or its funds beyond his personal work for Black (Andrew J. Levander — Wikipedia). Black has said he "deeply regrets" the relationship and has since committed funds to women's initiatives. He later told the House Oversight Committee that he considered himself defrauded by Epstein — testifying Epstein "duped him" out of tens of millions of dollars in fees — and declined to answer questions about non-disclosure agreements tied to Epstein, leading Rep. James Comer to subpoena related records (CNBC).

Black has not been charged with any crime, and the Dechert review — while commissioned by Apollo rather than an independent prosecutor — found no evidence of wrongdoing on his part specific to Epstein's crimes. [VERIFY: whether any subsequent investigation revisited the Dechert findings.]
