The New York Office requested the NFC to lacer-
tnin the current status of MALCOLM X at Mhcmad'a Mosque
#4» Washington, D. C. The "Washington Post," a Washington,
D. C. daily newspaper, in its issue on October 21, 1963, on
page B~1, carried an article captioned "Professor to Direct
Black Muslims Here." This article advised that LONNIE X
CROSS recently replaced MALCOLM I LITTLE as Minister at
Mosque §4. The article advised that HLLCQLH I had been
serving on In interim basis at Washington, D. 6., Since last
April, when LUCIUS X BROWN was dismissed as Minister of
Mosque #4.

Muslim from Atlanta, was in Birmingham observing the .

KING's non-violent movement and he claimed that aubJect V

1963, which reflected that subject attacked President
KENNEDY for the manner in which he dealt with the
Birmingham racial crisis. Subject claimed that President
KENNEDY'e statement to Alabama editors in a recent meeting
with them, that failure of the non-violent movement for
Negro rights might spur Negro extremist groups such as
the black Muslims, indicated that President KENNEDY did
rnot want hegroee treated right because it was rightq
but because the world was watching.

On May 5, 1958, the first source advised MUHAMMAD
had, upvn advice of legal counsel, tempered his personal
statements and instructions to his ministers concerning
the principles of his organization in order to avoid
possible prosecution by the United States Government;
however, he did not indicate any fundamental changes in
the teachings of his organization.
On July 10, 1963, a third source advised MUHAMMAD
had early in July, 1958, decided to de-emphasize the
religious aspects of the teachings of Islam and to stress
the economic benefits to be derived by those Negroes who
joined the NOI. This policy change, according to MUHAMMAD,
would help him acquire additional followers and crests
more interest in his programs.

in Chicago, Illinois. Mosque $7 follows the policies ar
programs as set forth by ELIJAH MUHAMMAD.
The date Mosque $7 originated in New York City
is not known.
However, in connection with the origin of Hos ue
