demanding an explanation.
More lately than ever before I disagree with
with Life Magazine articles & the one a week or so after
Mr. Hoovers blast on our Congress was most blastphemy.
Ive almost had it with "Life." Hope you rec. this as I have

LIFE editors have your query about Loudon Wainwright's
colmm, "The View from Here," published in LIFE Hay 22, -
based on your reading of Halter Hinchell's column.
As you sy know, Hr. Wainwright's column is a recent sd- I
dition to LIFE. In introducing it, LIFE's Managing Editor
George Hunt said in his Editors Note, published Hatch 27:

Wainwright has worked for L for 15 years
as a reporter, staff writer an editor. His
stories on the Astronauts, particularly the
oving account of Annie Glenn during her
husband's historic flight, are among his most

The new column will be one of personal eent, __
and its intent is to say how things feel, not
to all of us but to one of us. Wainwright's
feelings about the film Dr. Strangelove not '
entirely shared by his editors! were the sub- u
ject of his first column two weeks ago. Last
week's column was called "A Dignified Loser

more than ten years ago due to the distorted, twisted and misleading
articles published in your magazines on subjects, particularly con-
cerning Latin America, about which I was familiar enough to at least
reesgnine the work of something more than just s misinformed repose

As an American, it is absolutely frightening to me to see that you now
consider your position secure enough to attack a man like John Edgar
Hoover using the same twisted, distorted tactics. I am reminded of
the closing sentence oi an article written by Henry J. Taylor and pub-
lished on January Z7, 1964 which states: "This nation USA ! is in

The thing that eludes me is why Agent Ceary solicited this man's assistanc
to apprehend mgitives and then failed him on the witness stand. Mso I do
not understand why Federal agents from the Treasury Department and the FBI
did not arrest bin.
The buzz among newspaper people in San Diego is that a new law was being
tested for the first time and to quote some of them; "The State had to have
a conviction or nobody could ever be held on that charge again". If this is
true, it is a shameful thing in my opinion.
Also I am told by reputable newspaper peoplethere that one of the high
State 18.1-men conded to others "This is a tough one because so ram; important
Sen Diegans and others are character witnesses for the defendant and ii he is
not indicted, we may be accused of being influenced by his important and
famous friends". The District Attorney is alleged to have told others "We
prosecute the guilty and raise hell with the innocent",
I was invited to meet the judge by Commissioner of Jurors Bowen but said:
"No, thank you, not while he is presiding over this case". One of his staff ;
also suggested when I asked where a good restaurant was at lunch! "Why not '
go up to the cafeteria in the bu:Llding"and I asked if judges, court attaches,
prosecutors, and Federallpeople would be there. The reply was "Very likely"
and I said "No, thank you, I will go to a. restaurant down the street", which
I did, '

mendations in the Warren report,

The record, however, doesn't indi-
