Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Hot-hitting Mustangs erupt again Medford explodes for 26 hits and 21 runs in an Area 4 sweep of Roseburg’s Dr. Stewart’s By TIM PYLE Mail Tribune Individually, they’re impressive. Collectively, they’re cold-blooded. Inevitably, they’ll erupt. Advertisement The Medford Mustangs, who produce more runs than "The Osbournes" does bleeps, were at it again Friday night at Miles Field. In the span of an American Legion AAA baseball doubleheader against Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s, Medford sprayed 26 hits and stomped on home plate 21 times to post wins of 10-2 and 11-6. Ho-hum. Going into the night, the Mustangs were hitting .406 as a team. After the Area 4 sweep, Medford (42-7, 12-4 Area 4) is averaging 9.8 runs per game. Explosive? A "Danger: red-hot bats await" sign should greet opponents as they walk through the Miles Field gates. "We’re ERA killers," said Mike Allen, who went a combined 6-for-8 to raise his team-leading average to .519. "Coming here is tough for an opposing pitcher. When we’re playing at Miles, it always seems like we hit the ball well." The Mustangs hit the ball especially well with two outs Friday, scoring 16 of their 21 runs when Dr. Stewart’s (28-13, 7-7) needed just one more out to escape an inning. In Game 1, Medford used a six-run fourth to take command. In Game 2, the defending state and regional champions did the same. Both times, the Mustangs did all their damage with two down. "We’ve got some pretty good hitters," said manager Sandee Kensinger, whose squad has six regular-season contests remaining before the state playoffs begin July 31 and is one game ahead of idle Eugene (10-4) in Area 4. "The only time we run into trouble is when we’re not selective at the plate." Leadoff man Rob Folsom was 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and a run scored in the opener. Ryan Heil, swinging out of the second spot, went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Allen, a fireballing right-hander, improved to 8-1 with a six-hit complete game. He struck out five against one walk and was 2-for-4 at the plate. Sky Manon was 3-for-3 and Ben Cooper 2-for-3 for Roseburg, which is now tied for third with Klamath Falls (5-5) in the standings. The nightcap became another nightmare for Dr. Stewart’s pitchers. After storming to a 5-2 lead through 2½ innings, Roseburg was flattened by a run in the third, six in the fourth and two more in the fifth from Medford. Dr. Stewart’s manager Jeremiah Robbins was ejected in the bottom of the third following Evan McArthur’s leadoff double. The throw from left fielder David Powell beat McArthur to second base, but the Mustang shortstop slid in safely, according to the field umpire. McArthur finished 3-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs and a stolen base, while right fielder Jimmy Ulrey blasted a two-run home run to cap off the six-run fourth and was 2-for-4 with three RBIs overall. Allen smoked four run-scoring singles in going 4-for-4 with four RBIs, with three of his hits of the two-out variety. Lefty Chad Hegdahl relieved Brady Rhodes after 11/3 innings and moved to 6-1 with four innings of solid work. Travis Glass doused a Dr. Stewart’s attempted rally in the sixth and picked up his third save. Powell ripped three hits and scored twice to pace Roseburg, which collected 17 total hits of its own during the twin bill. The Mustangs’ scheduled doubleheader today against Mountain View of Bend has been canceled.
